I used to think of myself as "conservative." You know, "socially liberal, fiscally conservative," but kept realizing I didn't agree with their positions on most issues. The dual falsehoods of "that's 'off budget' " and embracing the Tea Party wrecked their chance with me.

My maternal grandfather was a southern Republican back when there were very few of them. I never really knew how my dad felt about politics. My mom was just a political junkie. I'm pretty sure she voted for Nixon in 1960, but also loved the Kennedys because she was into fashion and appearance*. I know she voted for Carter, because Georgia. After her second marriage, she and my step father were mostly Fox News viewers, though mom still watched a lot of CNN, because she had known a lot of the people who worked there when it started.

*If my mom was a "Britcom" character, it would be a mixture of Hyacinth Bucket ("it's pronounced 'Bouquet'") from Keeping Up Appearances and Edina Monsoon from Absolutely Fabulous.

I want to know more about this "getting your own apartment in NYC at 14 with baby sitting money" origin story.  I was making about $75,000 in 2004 and my own NYC apartment was hopelessly out of reach.

Normally I roll my eyes at the suggestion that celebrity / athlete opinions are worthless...some are as well educated as the politicians we elect.

In this case, however, I agree with you. I've seen her interviews.

More realistically, she was probably parroting her dad's views on politics because she was basically apolitical and figured her dad knew what he was talking about. As someone from a red state with a lot of friends barely in their 20s, that's really common.

Most of my friends finally wake up over LGBT or family planning issues, although some of them start dating dickhead 20 year olds who had Ayn Rand inflicted on them in English 101 and go the weirdo hardcore libertarian route.

She's from the blue city that feeds the red rest of the state. It's not that she's from Kentucky. It's that she's born into wealth and will keep at the comfort levels she's been familiar with all her life at nearly any and all costs.

People can change their minds.

I grew up in a multi-generational conservative family, I was an NRA member for most of my youth. Now I'm very liberal, so is my immediate family. For me personally, I changed after expanding my education and realizing that I had very little in common with the party. My Dad changed after he went to college.

Sometimes you grow up in a bubble, especially if your family is involved in a religious community (I grew up Mormon- though no one in my family remains Mormon). I also grew up rural, so guns, god and country were the most important aspects of politics. If you never leave that bubble, you never have a reason to even consider changing.

Hitler would be fine, as long as he keeps the tax rates low on higher income individuals.

It's an article from jezebel.com. Quite possibly the worst quality of writing and "reporting" that exists On the internet. If they did an article about Jesus coming back to fix everything in the world I would look for another website to read about it.

Whenever I see their tag on the submission I refuse to read the article their writing is that atrocious.

No! You must always have right opinions since birth or you're a piece of shiat on the bottom of their shoe!
