captainN: Pre meditated murder is premeditated murder..

Would you kill a 3 year old who was conceived in rape? So why is it ok  to kill a viable baby in the third trimester.

Roe v wade is finished and I'm glad.
Once trump get reelected I'm hoping for an executive order that goes right to the supremes

Even your anti-choice people recoil at the thought of killing a desperate woman.  She would be guilty of murder for hire in their view of the world.  The doctors they see as pure evil so they have no problem killing them.

If you make it illegal there may be no doctors to kill, but plenty of women will die.

Nope, if it was left up to the people pushing Barrett into that seat, they'd have both the woman and her doctor executed.

Which is totally pro life (eyeroll)

'Pro-life' to them only deals with the unborn.

Once someone is born, they'll the thrown to the wolves, just like every other person that isn't them.

Not sure which is more vomit-worthy: Barrett's omission or the idjits trying to defend it by misstating the Ginsburg Rule.

That is certainly a position someone could hold.  Unfortunately, it's also possible for someone to hold the position that anyone in a position of power who thinks so should also be subject to capital punishment.  So we appear to be at an impasse.  Do, please, attempt to force the issue, however.

Fundies are fine with killing women who have abortions, or act in any way opposed to men. They're no different than fundie Muslims or Jews.

Zagloba: chewd: Whenever ive had to debate abortion with a pro-lifer i always ask them what they think the punishment should be for women who have abortions.

They never seem to want to punish the woman, they always want to lock up the doctor and let the woman go free. Which is weird because if you hire a hitman, they dont arrest just the hitman.

Like with most things, conservatives dont seem to have thought it through that far.

You talk to a nicer class of pro-lifer than I do. I've argued with several who want the woman prosecuted for murder.

Trump himself said in the 2016 campaign that "something should happen" to women who get abortions.

He said he was going to do it!

Basically to lob softball questions to hide what the prospective justice will actually rule when seated.

They know enough that if the person had to actually answer the questions, there are just enough American citizens smart enough to realize she's just as partisan as the Republicans, if not worse.

"Could" or "should?" Because if your question is "COULD abortion be punishable by death," well who the fark knows? Anything's possible with THIS administration. Now, if your question is SHOULD, then that's a question ACB can actually answer.

No, "could" is an appropriate question as well. It requests that the potential jurist analyze the question with respect to constitutionality, which would be...you know...her entire farking job if she's confirmed. It's not unreasonable to ask her what her thought processes might be if, for example, Mississippi or Alabama decide that a clump of cells has more rights than the ambulatory uterus hosting it.

Why are you talking about third trimester abortions?  Do you have any idea how exceedingly rare they are?  In the rare instances they are performed, they're done for extreme medical reasons involving life or death, or due to horrifying situations so grotesque that the law is not equipped to handle the situation.

"Convenience" third trimester abortions are somewhere in the single or low double digits each year.  Doctors simply won't perform them in general.  Rights to abortion access is about where ~99% of medically elective abortions take place - in the first few months of pregnancy.

Going off on third trimester elective abortions is like making automobile safety laws to curb the existence of pink Triumphs that roll coal.  Focus on the legality of things that exist in large enough numbers to matter.

Both of my goddaughters were born via IVF. Their parents are both hardcore Republicans and voted for Trump. I asked if ACB's view on this was concerning to them and they said no because we got our kids while it was legal. When I said what about if your daughters have the same issue. They said well...it will probably be legal in a few blue states...they can just go there.

I think its a touchy subject because the issue is always dropped there since 1 daughter wants to be a ACLU lawyer mainly in the area of voting rights for minorities and the other wants to be a social worker for immigrant children.

phrawgh: People of Praise used to refer to female members as "handmaids."

Former People of Praise member Coral Anika Theill, who joined the group in 1979 and is now 65, told the Associated Press that when she was a member, women were expected to live in "total submission" to their husbands. Theill told AP, "My husband at the time was very drawn to it because of the structure of the submission of women."

According to Theill, her husband accompanied her to gynecological appointments to make sure she was not obtaining birth control.

Reimers wrote, "A married woman is expected always to reflect the fact that she is under her husband's authority. This goes beyond an acknowledgment that the husband is 'head of the home' or head of the family; he is, in fact, her personal pastoral head. Whatever she does requires at least his tacit approval. He is responsible for her formation and growth in the Christian life."

Women had to be obedient. They had to be subservient."

We have yet to see one very relevant question asked: are we appointing ACB to the court or are we appointing ACB's husband by proxy?

/seems a question worth asking, even if it's OK for Christians to lie in order to establish GOD(S) KINGDOMTM

Any man attracted to that way of life needs therapy.  Red flag.  Run away!

My husband would be sick at the thought. And very bored with me being completely subservient.  And eventually dead when I snap.

Trump doesn't give a shiat about abortion.  He never even talks about it.  He.  Does.  Not.  Care.

Bennett was nominated to the court because she will undo everything that GInsberg achieved.  Period.   Much like trump attempting to reset eight years of Barrack Obama, the republicans care little about the potential collateral damage, as they are blinded by personal hatred.

It's going to take decades to undo the damage of the last four years.

Difficulty: Americans are so stupid they'll put Republicans back in charge before the repairs can be done.

"kill a viable baby"

Wrong. If it was a "baby" it would have a SSN and a birth certificate. Furthermore, a 3rd trimester abortion is only allowed under the most extreme circumstances. And furthermore, again, it's a matter between a woman and her doctor.

As usual - you people are completely wrong, and full of emotion.

Pointing out the serial hypocrisies of the "right to life" movement is the easiest thing in the world.  Even Trump, during the 2016 election, figured out that, if you make abortion illegal, the woman who chose the abortion must be punished along with the doctor who performed the abortion.  His handlers, however, quickly informed him that the official anti-choice line is that the woman is a victim, not an accomplice, so she can't be punished.  Of course, it's easy to view the woman as a victim when you think women have no agency and shouldn't be trusted to make decisions for themselves.

2020-10-22 9:46:43 AM
If this is what it takes to wake people up, so be it.

Every election matters. This nomination didn't fall from the sky.  It's the result of 20-30 years of anti-abortion voters coming out and casting their ballots several times every two years. Primaries, runoffs, generals. State legislatures, state attorneys general, off-cycle congressional, off-cycle senate... the elections with 33% turnout matter. Stop sleeping on them. This is what happens.

But the belief in inconsistent.  So inconsistent that you quickly realize they don't actually believe what they're saying from head to tail.  When you follow through with what this fetal personhood idea entails (which is what you'd need to call it murder), they balk at nearly every consequence.

They SAY they believe it's "murder", but they don't see frozen IVF fetuses as eligible to get Medicaid benefits or be counted in the census.  Miscarriages aren't cause for a murder investigation, nor should they be counted in death statistics.  Sure, a few will pound the table and say those things are correct, but the bulk of people advocating for personhood amendments just create other loopholes to set those ideas aside.

Because the purpose is the create a twist in the law that gives a punishment for sex that wasn't intended to reproduce.  That's it.  It's enforcement of a moral code based in religious thinking.  Not a clear legal framework.

Why would a woman carry her rapist's baby to the third trimester if she didn't want to have it?

Anyone in the third trimester wants to have the baby.

Every human body is unique. They malfunction in unique ways, and the consequences can range. The only person with all the facts available are the person that owns that body. The second most knowledgeable person is the doctor treating them.

Thinking that you know better than a woman who has carried a fetus for 6 months requires a great deal of pride.
