Without a racist president in the White House, giving orders to a fascist AG running the DOJ, chances are that acts of right-wing terrorism won't be handwaved aside as merely high spirited hijinx, or egged on in a series of official tweets.

Win this battle. Elect Biden, the senate, house, state, and local.

But then continue to fight the war against those who are against society.

Hydra is the best example of who the enemy is.  The war is forever.  Stay true to your principles.

Keep fighting. Keep being honest.

How did they not see this coming?!

From another ex-Republican who suddenly noticed the racism on the right:

STEVENS:I think you're absolutely right. Who are the intellectual leaders of the Republican Party? People like Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity. Laura and Tucker are smart people who are saying stupid things because it's good for their careers, and because they have some sort of strange emotional issues they're working through publicly. They're both angry people. Hannity is just a guy who never graduated from college having the time of his life. But they're the intellectual leaders of the party. That's one of the reasons I felt it was so important to track William Buckley in the book. Now, there's this lost sense of intellectual seriousness that Buckley personified. And that's true. But Buckley also started as a stone-cold segregationist.
GRUNWALD: Sure, but it wasn't like you didn't know about Buckley's history. I
guess you just thought it wasn't the important part of Republican history.
STEVENS: I thought the evolution Buckley went through was almost a biological evolution that any intelligent person would go through. I thought you would have to come to grips with the reality that racism was a flawed conceit. I thought that was inevitable. I wouldn't have thought it possible that a president in 2020 would be defending Confederate monuments and the Confederate flag, or that his chief of staff John Kelly would be arguing that slavery wasn't the cause of Civil War. I would've thought it was no more likely than that we'd be having a debate about gravity. I was wrong.

Pehaps, but until Biden is sworn-in on January 20th, there's tsill a racist president in the White House and a fascist AG running the DOJ, so acts of right-wing terrorism will be handwaived and possibly evidence mishandled to prejudice cases against right-wing terrorists.

I fully expect the two and a half months from the election to the swearing-in to be the most turbulent in America in my lifetime, possibly the most turbulent in the lives of any living American, and I am well aware that living Americans went through the civil rights struggle, the Vietnam War, and other periods of strife that I wasn't around for.

Haven't we known this since his deplorables were beating up Democrats in 2016? I'm more certain of post-election violence than I am of the sun rising tomorrow morning.

He's not wrong.

Authoritarians do not retract their beliefs. They seek out and destroy anything that threatens them.

If Trump loses his followers will not go away. They'll simply find a new Trump.

We've been thinking this for a while, honestly. There's no way trump and co win without massive amounts of obvious cheating, and no way his supporters stay quiet if he loses. either way someone riots, and I fully expect the shooting to start for real. The election is going to act as a starting pistol.

All the more reason to have a president who fills the AG position with someone who will come down on em like the iron fist of an angry god. After enough of em are pushing up daisies or fillin prison cells then the rest will find out they can get along with their fellow citizens after all.

Either this, or Trump is just going to be so defeated, that his lazy ass won't do a damn thing. He's already talking about how he doesn't want to be doing what he is doing. He didn't want to be in Erie last night. He's giving up, because he isn't actually a fighter. He's had everything in life handed to him. He knows he is toast.

Which is why reaching across the isle won't be viable for a while. Democrats need to smash all of the machinery Republicans have used to be a minority ruling party. Until that happens Republicans will continue to be rewarded for radicalizing themselves. They won't stop unless they have power taken away from them.

2 things about this:

1. The division in this country can absolutely be blamed on Trump.  Once he started giving credibility to all the social media conspiracy theories, it emboldened all of the assholes to proudly come out of the woodwork.  And now that they are out, it's going to be tough to put them back down.

2. There are going to be riots after the election.  If Trump loses, the right is going to riot, law and order be damned.  If Trump wins, the Left's protests and riots are going to make the BLM protests look like a walk in the park.  It might actually end with the White House being burned to the ground.

There is a direct line from the emergence of Sarah Palin as a national political candidate and the emergence of Trump in 2016.

Despite losing she normalized a level of derpy, dumb as a rock, conspiracy theory prone Republican candidate that spawned others that helped make Trump seem viable.

And yeah, Steve was all in on her.

That noted, should probably put a pin in this legit grudge for now.

Until sometime late in January would be best.

That particular period of strife included domestic bombings.
As someone who wasn't around for it, you might be shocked by the number.

It is part of our history that almost never gets mentioned in any more detail than that one Baptist Church in Birmingham - there were 50 or so just in that city during the civil rights era. There were many more nationwide.

I rather hope you are wrong but it's clear there are a lot of folk who want just that sort of thing.

No...The R's in congress screamed bloody murder and claimed persecution when the FBI warned that right-wing-extremism was a threat way back during the early Obama years.

The R party as a whole is fomenting the extremism.

This is what I keep reminding my friends when they talk about how relieved they'll be come Nov. 4th once Biden is elected and the political situation will start calming down. I don't think the bullsh*t the Republicans have stirred up will just quietly disappear overnight the moment it's announced that Trump lost. There will still be a bunch of radicalized MAGA asshats out there eager to start a civil war over Trump's loss, and it's a safe bet that Trump himself will do more to egg them on than he will to dissuade them.

At the very least, we can expect to see a couple months of Trump b*tching endlessly about how unfair the election was, and doing everything he can to cast doubt on the results. And all of this is presuming that Trump loses.

I think we're likely in for a rough ride until at least mid-February 2021 if Biden wins. If he loses...I don't even want to think about it.
