I hope that same team has just as much fun tonight.

I forget which series/game it was, but earlier in the playoffs, Jon Smoltz said, "this might be the worst baserunning I've seen in years." He's not wrong.

I don't follow the Red Sox like I did 10 years ago, but I can probably answer this question. This ownership group goes through ebbs and flows. They're also kind of stupid. They offered Jon frickin' Lester some shiat deal because "we don't value pitchers in their 30s". They really could have used him in the following seasons.

They paid David Price a shiat-ton of money and gave him an opt-out hoping he'd opt out and they'd just get a really good pitcher for a couple years. Then he got hurt at the exact wrong time and opted in.

They hired Dave Dombrowski because things had been ebbing and they needed a flow. Dave did what he does, pays for the highest price free agent and trades away the entire farm for a good pitcher. It worked out...they got a world series out of it, but neither of those guys played for the Red Sox this year.

So they offered Mookie a lot of money, but nowhere near what he was projected to make. And they just stuck to it. So he said, "Nah, I'll wait". Eventually they had to trade him because they didn't want to pay that much.

And now they have zero pitching. Maybe they thought it wasn't worth paying him since they were going to suck for a few years. But they didn't get a whole lot for him. They should have got everything they gave away to Chicago for Sale back.

So when did the fiddle player from Kansas start his pitching career?

I guess I missed two runs while typing that out.

This Rays pitcher works fast. Gets on the rubber. Looks at the sign. Throws the pitch. Not rushing, just not wasting time in between every pitch. As I say this he wastes some time. But you need to do that once in awhile.

Also looks like he's breathing in a rhythm.

That guy in the stands who caught the long foul ball near the RF pole was wearing a shirt similar to this.
I didn't know there was a story behind that phrase. Link

My son has to be in the same room as me (the girls took over the family room) and he cares little about baseball and knows less.

But they kept saying "Will Smith" and he got excited for a second. I tried to get his interest by saying "they also have the real-life Gritty" and showed him Justin Turner. He believed me for only half a second but it was worth it

I'm slightly behind (had to pause to walk the dogs) so just heard the comment about how the pitcher smells terrific cuz of his hair products. That hair looks like it eats hairbrushes

Well, you do you!

When I grew up in Tampa the Reds were the spring training team, so many of us were Reds fans.  Especially since dad taught me baseball while I watched the Big Red Machine: Rose, Bench, Morgan, Tolan, etc. Great memories following  that team, and dad taking me to games. Including the time dad took my to a game in Cincy and I got to see Don Drysdale pitching against the Reds.

But one day dad took me to a Reds-Dodgers spring training game - it wasn't nearly the madhouse back then than it is now - Steve Garvey was at the rail signing autographs. So I tell dad I want Garvey's signature, he grew up in Tampa. So I wait my turn in line, I get up to him, and Steve Garvey looks at my dad and says, "Mr. [Earguy]! How are you? They converse for a minute, I'm standing there dumbfounded that Steve Garvey knows my dad. Okay, gotta go!

I never got Steve Garvey's autograph. And it turns out that my dad taught Steve in high school.  I keep intending to write him a letter retelling the story and hoping he returns an autograph. I've read that if you send a check to his foundation that he'll sign anything  you send with a return postage envelope. But he's aging, I really should do it one of these days.

Lucky Stu: I'm just glad Mookie is in Dodger Blue

I pretty much ignored the Red Sox starting in 2011 when they felt the need to mudsling Francona on his way out. I was fine with them firing him. Sometimes you need a change. But the man gave them so much, he should have been given a limo escort to every interview until he got a new job. Instead they put out hit-pieces on him that he was a drug addict and all kinds of nonsense.

I didn't give a shiat about the Sox 2013 World Series. I watched 1 inning...the ninth inning of the clinching game. When it happened I literally said out loud to nobody because nobody was in the room, "Hm. Good for them."

Mookie Betts got me a little bit interested in the team along with a lot of the other young players they had. I watched 20 games in 2018 and probably a couple games of each playoff series. I think I watched all the games of the World Series that year.

Although it wasn't the same excitement I got for previous championships my teams in all sports have won, I was genuinely happy for all those guys.

That's awesome! Except for the missed autograph part. I went to Dodgertown in Vero for their last two years there and I've been to Camelback three times now.

And even though I dislike the Phillies, their spring training is right here in Clearwater and the Blue Jay's are just up the road in Dunedin.  I grew up in Ventura County and knew Mike Lieberthal from Westlake who was beloved in Philly then became a Dodger at the end of his career.
