electric hummer?

I thought an Electric Hummer was something completely different.  Maybe I'm thinking of a Rusty Venture or a Double Frogman.

If you asked me to list the truck / offroad platforms I'd be interested to see converted to electrics, I can't think of one that I'd rank below Hummer.

Hummer

But....why?

Hummers have always been obnoxious, garbage vehicles.  They're terrible off-road, and frankly not really any better on the road. Uncomfortable, ridiculously heavy, poorly made with parts not designed to deal with a 3 ton vehicle, shiatty brakes, terrible ground clearance, it's a pretty exhaustive list when you're looking at all the reasons the Hummer was never capable of doing what it pretended it could.

Now, a Humvee on the other hand....but a civilian Hummer? Why?  Nobody bought them the first time around.  Remember when you stopped making them because of poor sales numbers?  It wasn't (entirely) because of the awful fuel economy and rising gas prices, it was because they sucked.  At everything.

Similarly, if you asked me to come up with a Fark headline for a story about an electric Hummer, I can't think of one that I'd rank below this one.

Can anyone explain the joke? Article is about GM and Detroit is referenced in the headline, I get that part. An electric car and the energy-inefficient Hummer is a mashup, I get that part. Where does Dave Matthews come in? Ukeleles? So confused.

In fairness, if I was looking to prove to the doubters that electric could replace even the worse gas guzzler suburban assault vehicles, Hummer would certainly be on the short list of symbolic choices

But - Its 2020. Nobody with half a brain doubts that aspect anymore. Now it's all about price difference, range, and ability to charge conveniently. Not about performance

Is subby going to stop the tour bus over the Detroit River and empty the shiat tanks?

Eddie Hazel's E string: Where does Dave Matthews come in? Ukeleles? So confused.

I guess I didn't read past Electric Hummer. It is a lame headline. Maybe it's a reference to a DMB song? I only know a couple of them, but I had a roommate who was a DMB fanboi and it was disturbingly like living with a deadhead who didn't smell like patchouli or have access to decent drugs.

Plus it will have the impressive operating range of 400, maybe even 500 yards.

GM is finally doing something right, they resurrected a dead brand to build a low volume ultra expensive vehicle as a proof of concept think of it like selling 10,000 prototypes. If it has teething problems no big deal it's not a Denali or Silverado, it will be expensive and have a limited audience. Those are all good things to get us reliable electric pickups in a few years.

I want a decent hybrid truck.  I live in the suburbs. I have a Nissan Frontier that gets used to haul stuff a couple of times a month.   I dont want a tank.  I dont go 4 wheeling.  Most folks with trucks dont.  I go to and from work, I go to Costco on Saturday.   I help the neighbor move a washing machine.  I take yard waste in.   I only need 4WD for the dozen or so times it snows in the winter.

I was really hoping that the 2021 Honda Ridgeline was going to get the hybrid power option, but nope.   I also dont want to spend $60+ on a F150 hybrid.   How about a midsize, AWD, Hybrid with a 4 Banger.  Hell Toyota should go back to its roots and just a small truck with the Corolla power plant.

What you and you neighbors need is a Community truck or two.

I'd love a RAV4 Prime pickup (plug in hybrid, ~40 miles on battery then a 4-banger gas engine, or use the gas with the electric for a 300 hp AWD vehicle), but I don't think they'll actually build it. If they did, I don't think it would sell, given that it'd cost at least $40k to start.

Chop the back off of a RAV4 and make your own pickup.

I've heard them described as Comanches in Clown Suits.

My favorite, though, was when the special person around the corner bought one and tried to put it in his 1957 garage.  Took out the garage door, the windshield, part of the roof, and shoved the garage door through the side of the garage.

Its a natural brand to bring out to counter the aesthetic of the Tesla truck. Honestly, i think it is a smart move in terms of trying to break the "treehugger" stigma among the majority of truck owners that don't actually need a truck.

That doesn't mean I'd ever be willing to get one, but there are a lot more morons that want an SUV driving experience while having the identity of a "truck owner" than those that buy them to use correctly.

Just saw the debut commercial on NBC. Looks cool, I guess. Nifty features and I think a 350 mile range. With that said, I could never afford or really want one.

Caught the engadget article on it from another linked article here:

Actually looks like it could be really cool if it wasn't a GM product and was maybe 3/4 the size it appears to be. It may never stop running, but you know the interior will be falling apart in 2 years so it will just make you more and more miserable the entire time you own it.

As many Teslas, Raptors and Brodozers as I see around here, I expect the roads to be full of them shortly after it goes on sale.

The guys at Engineering Explained got a sneak preview of this thing and put out a good in-depth review.

Looks like a pretty cool piece of tech.

I'm trying to imagine the feeling you'd get from spending north of $100k to look at that tired steering wheel and gear shifter all day long.
