(Yahoo)   There have been many odd things about 2020, but Joe Buck and Troy Aikman being caught on a hot mike saying something most of us actually agree with might be one of the most unlikely   (sports.yahoo.com) divider line

Uh, the flyover is just an excuse. Aviators need flight hours to maintain quals and flyovers don't ADD to that, they do flyovers instead of whatever boring shiat they would do otherwise.

So, no, it doesn't waste taxpayer money.

Do F18 carrier air groups have trouble getting enough flight hours in?
Really?

Damn, beat to the punch.

Im ok with the flyovers, they provide a useful training purpose for air crews and would largely be done elsewhere otherwise. The idea that the US military can coordinate an attack to coincide with a musical flourish is actually good news for preventing unnecessary casualties, it just highlights how much attention to detail goes into these attacks.

All of thay being said, fark Joe Buck in particular.  I hope he never escapes this. He consistently denigrates any team that doesn't play on the east coast especially outside of football. He is the aluminum standard for shiat-tier sports broadcasting.

Probably not. At a guess.

Given the choice between a group of pilots who are trying to fulfill their training hours and an announcer who likes to piss in working class kids' shoes, the choice to me is obvious.  Joe Buck is still an asshole.

This is no more idiotic than doing a flyover for a Super Bowl in a domed stadium.

Which is to say pretty idiotic.

2020-10-20 6:25:13 AM
The few times I've been to a sporting event the flyover didn't happen like it does on TV.  The producers show the tape when they want, not when the jets were actually going overhead.

A lot of people don't get that, no matter how many times you repeat it. I remember many a year where the leadership canceled flight after flight for months to make sure there was enough fuel to make it through to the end of the fiscal year only to have three lines every day in the last month of the fiscal year to make sure they used it all when they miscalculated.

If they're going to fly, and they are, where they fly to is pretty much irrelevant. That won't change if Biden wins. It was very interesting learning their political leanings, though. Troy's popularity in Texas just hit the wall, and Joe Buck may have gained a few fans.

It means even Troy Boy can see through Trump's false tough-guy facade, and that he believes a Biden administration will focus the efforts of the Federal government on things that will have a real benefit to society.

It also means a couple of my Cowboy fan Trumper friends, who have had man crushes on Aikman since 1993, are going to have a tough time reconciling their beliefs, lol.

Carriers are in port for maintenance far more often than they are out to sea. Their air wings spend more time training from their home base than deployed.

Hmm. I've seen two flyovers, both of which were on 4th of July Braves games, and they came over right at about the "Home of the Brave" part.

The games themselves were unremarkable besides the crushing heat.  You don't want to sit in a concrete bowl in the July sun in Atlanta if you can avoid it.

What I want to know is why is it limited just to flyovers?  Why not practice bombing and strafing runs?

runwiz: What I want to know is why is it limited just to flyovers?  Why not practice bombing and strafing runs?

They do practice that.  Flyovers are time-on-target exercises.  Take off and navigate to fly over the stadium at a certain angle right as the anthem singer gets to "Home of the Brave".  It's practice to show they can get to a certain target a certain way at an exact specified time.  That it makes a big show is only secondary.

stan unusual: Do F18 carrier air groups have trouble getting enough flight hours in?

Did you even read their post?  They said that they don't add to it.  They're doing this instead of a different exercise they would have used the same fuel on, and if their carrier is sitting in port they're sitting at an airfield doing training exercises anyways.

I think Troy's analysis here is incorrect.  Flyovers at NFL games and other major sporting events seem to be a bipartisan act.  They will continue regardless of the election outcome.

Was golfing in Wisconsin a few years back when the squadron(?) heading to Lambeau went over our heads just before kick-off.

Pretty cool to see, and quite the coincidence too, since we were some 70 miles away in Wautoma, and since they only had a very few minutes to get to the stadium by noon, I gathered that those were some pretty fast planes.

they were saying the flyover was a waste, but given it's the nfl, that sounds like a trump endorsement to many in the audience

2020-10-20 9:45:32 AM
That's a lot of jet fuel

McDill is roughly 10 miles from RJS. An F-16 gets about 0.7 mpg at cruise. And there were four planes. Let's say the planes actually flew 50 miles all said and done. So that's:

50 miles * 4 / 0.7 (miles/ga) = 285 gallons

So, yeah, not a lot of fuel.

Thanks. For that flyover mentioned in the article, at least, they were on their way to Toledo.

I did laugh at this comment: "Will they be dropping testing kits?"
