Bill Maher is a dumbass, why should Democrats make this into a fight against religion?  That's what will happen if they attempt to bring up her being a crazy Catholic.  Just stick to the face that she self identifies as a conservative, and regardless of her non-answers, we KNOW she's going to rule against affordable healthcare, and against abortion rights.

This is the kind of thing that makes conservatives imagine "the media" is out to persecute them just for being Christians. Somehow they don't realize that Bill Maher isn't actually the entire mainstream national news media.

The Bible is OK with abortion. The Bible actually requires that pregnant women accused of adultery go to their priest, who would give her a test that would cause the baby to be aborted if it isn't the husband's. (Numbers 5:11−31). I've never once heard a Christian try to square that biblical teaching with the the modern Republican stance on abortion.

The LORD God of Israel also repeatedly defines Personhood as beginning at age one month after birth (twice in Numbers Chapter 3 alone, plus five mentions therein of His commandment being carried out with respect to a Census of the various sub-tribes of Levites, and then all of the Israelites, for a total of seven mentions of that in that one chapter; plus the opening of Leviticus Chapter 27 in which the LORD assigns monetary value to various demographic groups yet no value at all to anyone under that age, and more).

Jack Sabbath: Well, she did overturn a ruling of damages on a rape case where a prison guard raped a female inmate, saying that since raping the prisoner wasn't part of his guard duties, there should be no payment.  And she said calling someone the N-word in a place of business does not constitute workplace harassment.

So even without religion, she is farking nuts.


No, it's BECAUSE of religion that she's nuts.  Take away the religion, and there's nothing left of her.

I just realized that a religion which accounts for like 20% of the population makes up most of the Supreme Court, Speaker, the next president (slurp), all but one late night host, and probably a bunch of other important shiat.

catholics have nothing against jews. my book in CCD back in the '90s was literally called "jesus was jewish" and we had a potluck passover seder after learning what each traditional food symbolizes.

Don't ask about her religion in particular. Ask her more generally about how a judge should deal with conflicts between the doctrine of their religion and the criminal and civil laws of the United States.

Court will be 7ish catholics and 2 Jewish,
20ish percent and 2 percentsih

50ish percent of our protestant nation
1ish percent Muslim 2ish percent other and 25 percent agnostic/atheist

I dont recall the vast majority of non catholics and jews being upset about the religious leanings of an of the justices before.  I really think an effort should be made to find atheist judges anyhow

I disagree with you on this. She's going to get put on the Supreme Court no matter what. Yes, she is a religious nutter but going after that will lead to a whole bunch of Republican talking points about how Democrats hate Christians in order to drive their voters to the polls. Instead the Democrats need to hold up some of her more atrocious decisions like the black man that she claimed didn't have a hostile work environment even though his supervisor was calling him the N-word to his face or the woman who was repeatedly raped in jail but was told that she couldn't sue the county because rape wasn't in the job description of the county employee doing the raping.


So? Since 2016 White Christians, ie. the Trumpers, are now a minority in this country. These people would never vote (D) to begin with, just need to hammer on all the corruption, immorality, and illegality of the Trump era and by 2024-28 they will be a distant memory. But until then, fark their feelings

Harris abandoning her claim that she believed some of the women that accused Biden of abuse pretty much killed the #metoo movement.  If the democrats went after Barrett it is possible that the Republicans could weaponize that against them.  Barrett is going to get confirmed.

Agree that he's an anti-vaxxer jerkoff.  But he usually nails it on religion -- and certainly nailed it on this front.  She should not even be considered for any official position, much less one of the most powerful ones in the nation.  She's a theocratic nut case.

But pointing out that 7 out of 9 justices will be Catholic if Barrett is confirmed (when only 20% of Americans are Catholics) was a depressing eye-opener.  Why are Dark Age cultists even considered for a job in America.  We're suddenly closer to theocracy than before, thanks to the Federalist Society and the GOP.  There should be a swift and strong reaction against this Handmaid's bullshiat.

It wouldn't be "packing the court" -- it would be "balancing the court."

I think you mean res judicata. Stare decisis looks for precedent when making a new finding, res judicata considers prior findings to be decisive and complete - meaning that the court does not revisit it.

You would never get anybody. The Republicans would rather collapse the judiciary than approve a moderate judge who might rule against them.

Actually you would. The president wouldn't be naming extremists any more (FYI - RBG would be considered fairly hard Left in the 90s). All of the Democratic appointees sitting on the court got plenty of Republican votes. The problem with Garland was that Mitch wouldn't allow any progress to occur. He would have been easily confirmed if given a vote. In that case Obama should have just seated him claiming that the Senate waived their opportunity to weigh-in.


You cited an example that disproves your position. Garland was a moderate who should have been able to be approved by a 2/3 majority. Yet the Republicans dug in and refused to confirm him anyway. They also declared that if Hillary had won in 2016, they would leave the seat empty for 4 years - and that's without knowing who she's even nominating. Now, if there was a 2/3 requirement on Barrett, they'd still put her up. When they couldn't get the votes, they'd claim the Democrats for voting against her because of her religion and then sit tight on their 5-3 majority. Then when Biden and a Democratic Senate try to nominate someone, the Republicans would vote it down and deny them the 2/3 majority they need. The seat would be vacant forever.

No, no he's not.

Attacking her because she belongs to fringe variant of Catholicism will look like, to the general public, that you are attacking her because she is Catholic, period, and there are way too many Catholics (and other Christians who might take offense as well) who vote to do that.

Like it or not, the vast majority of American voters are at least nominally Christian.


That isn't a reason not to bring it up.  If they're not hearing what you're saying then you need to keep saying it until they get it.

If you think a person's religious beliefs are off the table when choosing your leaders, then you deserve to have people making decisions about the environment who believe that everything's fine and God won't destroy the Earth because he promised Noah with a rainbow and everything.  The problem with that is, the rest of the world has to live with those consequences too, and all because you're too timid to make religion an issue.

She would refuse to answer it. I think the best thing to do is to just read from her papers, speeches, and opinions and just say, "those are your words, correct?"

Catholic priests used to perform abortions back in the day.

The Penitential of Vinnian (often attributed to Finnian of Clonard) takes an even more permissive attitude to abortion. ... If [a woman] has an abortion, she is to fast on bread and water for six months and refrain from wine and meat for two years. "But if she bears a child and her sin is manifest, (she shall do penance) for six years, as is the judgment in the case of a cleric, and in the seventh year she shall be joined to the altar, and then we say her crown can be restored and she may don a white robe and be pronounced a virgin." Presumably, this restored virginity after six years of penance for childbirth applied specifically to nuns, not laywomen.

Significantly, however, Vinnian treats religious men's sexual and reproductive sins much more severely. If a cleric has sex only once and covertly, he is to fast a full year on bread and water and two years without wine and meat; if it's habitual, three years on bread and water, three years without wine and meat, and loss of office. A cleric who begets a child and commits infanticide must fast for three years on bread and water, followed by three years without wine and meat for two-thirds of each year and one-third on bread and water as well as "exile from his own country, until a period of seven years is completed." Only after all that is he eligible to be restored to office. Vinnian concludes that section by declaring, "If, however, he has not killed the child, the sin is less, but the penance is the same." For abortion, the sin must have been significantly less, as the penance was nowhere near the same.

Bill Maher has sort of mastered the art of "not wrong, still an asshole".

I mean, except for the half of the time when he's both wrong and an asshole, I'm talking about how he comes off when he says something that's more or less correct.  I don't think I've ever heard him say something correct without my reaction being that I'm fed up with this useless asshole and his useless, unhelpful bullshiat first, and that I guess he's technically correct or whatever, but who cares, second.

Possibly. However, that refusal would seem to allow a follow up question as to whether she herself would, in fact, adhere to the oath she took to "administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich" and "faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me under the Constitution and laws of the United States."

They have made him not at all funny by agreeing with him on everything, laughing at Herp like it's insightful. The worst thing that can happen to a comic...JUST NOT FUNNY.
