This stuff is the sign of us not improving.

Oh look an adult totally uber mastered a 34 year old video game that was designed with kids age 8-18 in mind as the primary target audience.

It's 2020, and "speed run" mastering a 34 year old video game for kids is even a thing people willingly show pride in doing, and willingly cheer on as if.

meanwhile Dr.Fauci can't get a full 20 min of uninterrupted air time without nit wit questions needing to be answered and few people's undivided attention.

Either it's Last Day, or you Run.  Don't confuse the two.

Speed running isn't really playing the game as it was originally designed, it's more exploiting glitches to allow you to finish the game faster.

Why this is a thing I don't really know, but to each their own.

Who are you to say what someone can and can't enjoy?

And since when did anyone put a maximum age that you're allowed to like video games?

And why are you implying that people who enjoy speed running a 34 year old video game don't listen to scientific advice? Not sure you've got your sweeping generalisation spread quite right mate.

I mean, shiat. Usain Bolt can run 100m in less than 10 seconds, but he is just doing something kids do right about when they can walk.

Listen, nearly all human endeavors can be reduced in such a fashion.

Wow, I'd never connected those things before, but now that you mention it, it totally makes sense.

counterpoint:  the fact that individuals can make a living doing something like this shows that true self-actualization may be possible. that's like some starfleet shiat right there.

trialpha: Speed running isn't really playing the game as it was originally designed, it's more exploiting glitches to allow you to finish the game faster.

Why this is a thing I don't really know, but to each their own.

I can't speedrun, because I lack the time to devote to developing the skill, and I'm also pretty sure that the brain damage I accumulated over the decades wouldn't let me approach the amount of skill necessary to do so.
But I can watch, appreciate, and befriend the people who do develop the skill. I can be supportive and cheer them in their efforts.
Every one of us does things that require some amount of skill, and that other people can be amazed can happen. Except for those people who choose not to develop any talent and instead choose to deride those who do.
So, looking at those choices, I'll develop my talents, and support those who develop their own, even when I don't get it. Because that's the decent and kind thing to do.

I mean seriously, what's next, people wanting to watch grown men chase a ball around an open field? This stupid crap kids watch these days, honestly.

IMO speed runs that rely on bugs in the game shouldn't count. That's tantamount to cheating, might as well just hack the code so you win as soon as you start it.

But don't you see, you and the other well-meaning fans are enabling him to piddle away his life.  He could be using his skills of cutting corners and breaking the laws of physics trying to constrain him to speedrun humanity to miracle cures, faster than light space travel, or evolving into beings of pure energy.

They have those.  "Arbitrary code" speedruns, where the goal is to corrupt the game's memory so you can skip to the end credits... or play the My Little Pony theme... or stream an IRC channel.

Usually the realm of TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) makers, but at least one - the Super Mario World credits warp - is simple enough to be performed by human players.

They keep those records too.  There are no glitch records and 100% completion records and records for different characters..  But there's a ton of in the moment skill to get the exact button presses at right times to exploit glitches and many of the glitches you die if you screw it up in tbe middle.  Casual gamers would struggle mightily and even the experts can fail at them a lot.
