Wayne's World 2 was in 1993.

Ladies' Man had some moments. The pickle-eating scene, for instance.

There have been 3 Nature Cat movies.  That's almost an SNL movie.

The Ladies Man was an excellent movie. Case in point: "I would begin with a very classy first line, something like: Excuse me sweet thing... can I buy you a fish sandwich? And then I'd start whisper her three words: Man, I'd like to take a bite outta' your butt."

Or this gem: "- Nun: Have you ever been down the Yellow River?
- Leon: ...Yea, once in the '80s but I did not enjoy it..."

Seconded. I can't speak to the quality of "Ladies Man" since I've never seen it, but if it's funnier than MaGruber then I have to see it immediately

Did it have to be a sketch on SNL or just have SNL people as the main cast?

I'd Say Wayne's World was the last good one in the first case.

Are there even recurring characters on SNL anymore outside of Weekend Update? What was the last non-WU recurring character they've had that wasn't Kyle Mooney playing himself?

I concur. MacGruber is pretty hilarious.

I find not one SNL launched movie ash stood any test of time for me.
I think it's this:

SNL = generally of its time humor in topic, tone or both + premise, not story based material, suited to short skit format that will not require substantial setup or lengthy character development, often reliant on gags and callbacks for the humor.

So all original source material here, is unlikely to be up to the task of a feature length story to tell movie stuff in the first place. You can only stretch so much material out of a one off of the day a gag, even a really good one.

I think maybe an even shorter way to notice it should not be a longer story:Are we here to laugh at or with our protagonists?one of those does not carry as long with most audiences as the other will. It's also the one more common to short skit humor. Maybe not just arbitrarily.

Blues Brothers is great. The "acting" of the band and musical guests is hilariously bad. I love it.

Kate McKinnon and Cicely Strong (and usually the guest host) in those skits where they go to get debriefed after alien encounters

And those are great. And would make for a god awful movie.

I don't remember much of it other than it was surprisingly bleak and depressing. It wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't a much of a comedy. Was not what I was expecting from a SNL movie.

I wouldn't call Ghostbusters an SNL movie...Although they have actors associated with SNL and SCTV, there wasn't any "Ghostbusters" sketch that launched it, like with Blues Brothers or Wayne's World.  Anyway, Blues Brothers didn't suck.  But all of those movies are outside the scope of the article anyway..." in the last 20 years".

Forgot, "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is ostensibly an SNL movie and it was maybe the funniest movie comedy of the 2010s*

*Not a high bar to clear to be honest

Stretching a five minute skit into a 90 minute movie usually doesn't work out well.  Besides Wayne's World, the rest of the "good" ones had very little or nothing to do with previous SNL exposure.

Blues Brothers is highly overrated.  Right up there with Swingers as movies that are always oversold.

really dude? BB has so many classic era musicians in the movie, awesome song and dance numbers, and is timeless.   I pretty much can't stand john belushi on SNL or animal house. but everything clicked in Blues brothers.

I find it odd that so many young folk watch SNL. In my day, SNL was something you watched when you weren't old enough to be out at 11:30 Saturday night, and even if you only watched the first half hour, midnight is a pretty late pre party outside a few major metros. I guess if you're going dancing you aren't really tied to bar hours though.

We have this thing called the internet. NBC has been putting clips and or whole sketches onto YouTube for at least the last 3 years.

At some SNL reunion thing on TV, Chris Rock took the stage. He scanned the audience of SNL cast and alums and said something like, "Looking at all of you sure brings back memories of a lot of bad movies."
