Fun fact: The first report of house rats in America was from Boston, Massachusetts in 1775.

The book from which this is drawn is very poorly edited and contains many duplications, errors, myths and incomplete factoids, but I Googled to confirm the date.

It was only a matter of time before some other city beat out NYC as the country's most rat-infested shiathole. NYC has gone all gentrified of late, no thanks to Trump, Guiliani, Bloomberg .... Well, maybe Bloomberg.

You wanna know how to get vermin? They pull a rat, you pull a glue trap. The rat sends one of yours to a chair top, you send one of his to the morgue. *That's* the *Chicago* way!

Had Chicago released the pythons four months ago, the rats would be gone, and the snakes would be starting to die from the cold.

You'd be surprised to see that some of the more expensive neighborhoods are the rattiest. If your street is full of 19th century buildings, they have had lots of time to make tunnels. Also the expensive neighborhoods are denser.I lived in a basement apartment in a place like this picture. I could hear them in the walls. I have a trophy collection of photos of the buggers I killed.

To be fair, the ranking is based on most new call-outs to Orkin, not overall call-outs.  I'm guessing NYC still tops the charts in overall shiat hole status.  It's easy to show up on the list when your numbers start relatively small.

Also, Chicago is home to Scabby, King of the Rats.

Actually, having been raised in Chicagoland, I  think their tavern style pizzas are awesome. Their thin crust cut into squares is great. But, as the universe makes it so, I met my now wife in San Francisco and she's from the east coast... My favorite joint is actually in New Jersey. Weirdly enough, my local favorite "normal" pizza is a pepperoni from a brewery called Bear Republic. Anyway.

If rats are an issue where you live, get a terrier. The brown rat, Rattus norvegius, is too much for cats to handle. But terriers were developedk just for this. Even small terriers are good. A friend got a Boston bull because they are natural clowns. The dog was was fierce on rats. He would find them in places where we humans never imagined they'd be, and he would take them down by grabbing their backs and shaking them to break their necks. He took one down that weighed as much as him!

We used to get them in our back enclosed porch when I lived in the city. I found out they were coming up through the floor drain. I filled  the pipe with rock salt and it kept them out.

I see you are unfamiliar with cities.

Median family income in Chicago is about $57,000. In some neighborhoods, one condo in a 3-flat like I pictured above would cost something like $500K to $900K.

They are expensive neighborhoods. The people in them are not making $57K/year.

I feel bad for this poor thing had to struggle with that shiatty New York "pizza" or starve.

Truth. A brownstone in Boston can be upwards of 2M.

A rat is a field mouse who discovered a food budget and shelter. Not their instance, mind you, but their evolutionary symbiosis with human activity. Their "spirit", or token meaning, was transferred to slaves and peasants attending Greek threshing floors and resulted in the cognate for "muscle". The seasonal rituals of threshing floors culminated in the praise and worship cults of Heracles.

Another expression of this comprehension is purportedly Napoleon and Frederick the Great's: An army moves on its stomach. Ernie Kovacs was a fan of Robert Graves' work, and so you should be. Read Frazer, too. And then read Graves' critique of him.

The average intelligence of mice and their demonstrations of social intelligence was more appreciated (observed and related) in ancient societies than only recently today. The social behaviors of mice and rats were frequently studied by sociologists in the 1960-70s and, as far as biology, their genetic similarity to humans (and relative low cost to harvest and maintain) made them the default experimental subject of Biology before any success is graduated to animals with greater similarity, like primates.
