OgreMagi: Zeb Hesselgresser: OgreMagi: I think people are just getting stir crazy.  Everyone's been cooped up in their homes with little interaction with the real world for so long that they're becoming more willing to take chances just for the opportunity to do something.

That's not even taking into account all the people who've been unable to work and have burned through whatever savings they might have had.

Tchernobog: Petey4335: Doctoral Candidate Zaius: "Braving" temperatures in the 40s, when a "heat wave" is 73...

That sounds like my kind of weather. Depending on the time of year, both are shorts weather.

when you get used to 0 to 25 degree degree F for a month or two, 40's feel warm enough for shorts

42 degrees F right now outside. Windows open. The breeze is nice.

/my rigged up 2nd filter (wet rag on the output) on my shopvac blew out as i was cleaning up durrock debris after cutting/fitting the last bits of my living room. Dry concrete dust went everywhere. Wife is out. I really really hope most of it clears before she comes back.

I hope the couch is clean if not.

Couch is in the 3 season room closed off from my stupidity.

That'll sober you up right quick.

Charles of York: Trumpsters  in the uk?

How your opinion of lockdowns relates to your politics often depends on where you live. In the UK, the most draconian lockdowns (including a new ordinance that forbids two people who do not live together from having sex indoors--good luck enforcing that!) have been implemented by the government of PM Boris Johnson, aka "the British Trump."

What they found in Italy was that when everyone gets it at once they have to choose who gets to be saved and who doesn't. Don't worry, I'm sure you won't get seriously ill. And if you do the medical staff will definately decide you deserve to be saved. You seem like the kind of person who would deserve it.

Oh, one small side effect, don't get a deep cut, or get into a road accident or well anything. Because when every hospital bed is full of covid patients they aren't going to keep one just for you and your hedge-trimming injury.

Right. The person advocating the use of safety equipment is the one who is shiatting his pants, not the milquetoast who is going to pass out because he just feels like he can't bweathe wif the big mean mask on. You plague rats are pathetic.

Do you wear a helmet at all times?  Wait, sorry.  You probably do.  But you keep wearing that mask while you order a pound of ham at the deli.  Keep thinking you're saving the world.  You are totally making a difference.

cleek: stay tuned for my new soon-to-be best-seller, Darwin Shrugged

Would it be just as stupid as Ayan Rand?

Synopsis: Libertarian internet troll and I.T. desk jockey, John Gulp, works from home at full pay. He laughs at the rubes who refuse to stay home during a pandemic.

He orders all his food from Grub hub and the local supermarket, laughing that those idiots who prepared his food for money, like some ancient caveman. He enjoys the electricity those idiots at the power company supply him through hundreds of thousands of miles of copper ad labor for money. What doofuses.

He orders all his fancy toys and gadgets from fellow Mega Genius and part-time dragon hoarder, Jeff Bezsos. Who employed an army of barely above market value slaves who can't afford rent and work 12 hour days in his many warehouses.

One day John Gulp looks out his window to see a caravan of wandering homeless people evicted from thier houses. He pulls out his Walmart megaphone and yells at them from the window "stop spreading plague you poors, go back to your homes!". They answer back "but I haven't had a job for 6 months!" some shout! Others cry "I'm on my way to work on foot, for I missed my car payment from my second job getting canceled."

John Gulp, in his infinite I.Q. has a gotcha question just for them. "But, haha, I saw on the news, just this morn! I read a headline that everyone in London, England and Miami, Florida are partying it up. You are all a bunch of MAGA fools!"

One shouted back "Wouldn't it be physically impossible to fit 2 million people into every pub and bar in either city?". But too late, John went back to his EZ-Boy XXXL reclining computer chair and had closed the window and was reaching to his tub of Jerguns.

Once Lord Darwin, winner of internet arguments has killed all the proles, ot would be him and his fellow I.T. professionals to rebuild society. An army of robots would do all the farming, infrastructure and manufacturing. It will be a Utopia.

Now on sale on Amazon. $35 hardback, $10.99 U.S. $12.79 Can. paperback.

No, they use Fahrenheit when it's hot because 100 degrees sounds hotter than 38 degrees. When it's cold they use Celsius because 0 degrees sounds colder than 32 degrees.

Viruses tend to become less lethal as they mutate (killing the host too fast does not help transmission) but so far Covid seems to be mutating more slowly than most. My unscientific guess is that today's testing is discovering more asymptomatic infections that would have gone undetected during the first wave, which would mean that in the spring there were actually 5-10 times more cases than there are today. Maybe the UK is indeed closer to collective immunity than previously thought, whatever percent the HIT may happen to be.

Which would be nice. But then skepticism can easily be just an excuse for believing what you want to believe. I try to tap the brakes whenever I feel myself agreeing too much with one side or the other.

What then?  I thought so.

Since recorded time started, alcohol has always been present.

There's actually a theory involving evolution.  Fruit flies (drosophilia) developed senses to detect and feast on rotting/fermenting fruit.  Humans and drosophilia are about 60% similar in the genome with 75% in particular diseases.

Somewhere back in time, an ancestor buzzing around found the nectar of the gods, and passed it on.

Almost -- Londoners decide drinking and partying is more important than YOU living. Most morons seem to assume that THEY THEMSELVES will be perfectly fine, and don't give a rat's arse if their poor choices puts OTHERS at risk....

Which is exactly the same reason the US has such atrocious numbers, "mah freedumbs!" trump your right to life.

Actually, snark aside, Rand cited collective problems (specifically atmospheric pollution, although she could have presumably used global pandemics as well) as calling for collective solutions - i.e. regulation by law.

"If the condition is collective, such as in an overcrowded city, appropriate and objective laws can be defined, protecting the rights of all those involved"

It's hard to say definitively, but I'd assume that Rand would have been A-OK with rational, science-supported, anti-pandemic legislation.

Australia. Doing well... relatively. Borders are still mostly closed, including state borders. I've been covid tested five times by my main client as a precaution (though the test does hurt). The only real problem is other countries farking it up and allowing this bastard covid to thrive.

Australian here too. We're doing well in terms of COVID case numbers but have made a bonfire of personal wellbeing and the economy, especially here in Victoria.

The repercussions of this will be felt for years or decades to come, especially if our Muppet of a Premier continues to chase elimination, and doubly so if an effective vaccine is late or never eventuates.
