What a fool. It's traditionally pronounced "throat warbler mangrove".  It's just spelled "Christopher Columbus".

Slightly off topic-as if that's ever stopped me before-but it just occurred to me that the myth that Christopher Columbus set out to disprove the flat earth, like I was taught in school, is so dumb that dingleberries that still defend Christopher Columbus as not a genocidal monster don't try and invoke it!

He got lost and accidentally bumped into America. And then he started the genocidal shiat. And then there were two dueling movies in 1992 about him.

Because they did. Flat earth theory was never  a thing that was taken seriously in human history.

From Google:
Eratosthenes
In 200 B.C. Eratosthenes estimated Earth's circumference at about 46,250 kilometers (28,735 miles). Today we know our planet's circumference is roughly 40,000 kilometers (24,850 miles).

Posidonius around 50 BC, calculated it at 24,000 miles.  Only off by 3%.

He wasnt a genocidal monster.

He was a monster, but the genocide got started when Cortez brought smallpox to the Americas during his conquest of Mesoamerica.

If it wasn't for that, the Spanish Conquest would have ended on La Noche Trieste.

I thought that Columbus sometimes went by his Spanish name, "Cristobal Colon." Which sounds a little like "Crystal Ball Cologne," which is a funny name.

This has nothing to do with the "killing and abducting natives just because" or "massively underestimating the size of the earth and going to his grave thinking he made it to India" things, but whatever.

Nope.

He was a tyrant and a slave master, he killed a lot of defenseless people; but the genocide was begun by the treasure hunters and villagers who fanned out across central and south America looking for gold. They introduced the diseases and upset the balances of power throughout the region, devastated the Aztec and Inca empires and set up viceroyalties, and killed indiscriminately in the quest for "El Dorado".

Columbus was small potatoes next to Pizarro, Cortez, Balboa, and the others who followed.

I know its chic to blame Columbus nowadays, but he was at most the key that opened the door. And I don't like to see him taking the blame for the battering ram that followed him in.

That is how cruel he was!

Can we just NOT play down what the fark he did?! Because even his contemporaries were like DUDE NO.

Oh, and didn't the genocidal shiat happen on the first voyage in the Bahamas or some such? IIRC he made three voyages. He hit SA on one of the return trips?

He was such a hero he died in prison for crimes against humanity.
