You could always shade player skin to an analog of whichever equivalent human race you wanted. The proportions and features of all playable characters are exaggerated cartoonish, and the faces had something like 20 polygons in them... It was pointless to attempt model changes to fit earth-equivalent ethnicity, and downright dangerous with the "That's Racist!" crowd ready to dogpile any perceived exaggerated feature stereotypical of an ethnicity.

They actually removed the darker skin tones at one point. I had one of them. They lightened them down. Which was an incredibly weird thing to do. I'm glad to see them back and then some. By far, the one thing everyone loves in WoW is the art team. Let the best part of the game loose. Not a hard concept..

I've been looking at the new models, though I hesitate to make major changes to some very old characters.  Plus they're all wearing N'Zoth inspired Old God gear, with no exposed skin, so you can't even see what you changed until the expansion goes live and we start replacing it.

My first Alliance character, long ago, was a human mage that I gave a bronze skin tone.  But I deleted him long ago, soon after he hit level 40.  Broke and underpowered, it took him about 9 spells and all of his mana to defeat one enemy.

Non-wasps, basically.

The net loves its initialisms. Not all of them are cromulent, but I always liked this one. Saves lots of typing.

Honestly? If I were making design decisions I'd consider the question "will they scream at us more for not making something possible, or for not policing what we made possible?".

Personally thought it was pretty cool of them to make Erudites the physically weaker but smarter than others race.  Little kick in the nuts for the stereotype crowd.

I love how they mention "lack of diversity" in Game of Thrones, as if the Summer Isles didn't exist.

Guild Wars Two had this same problem until an expansion took them to where the brown people lived. You could make a male POC with some considerable finagling, but females on both the human looking races were pretty much barbie and Amazon barbie.

The game had sliders for facial features and a couple of hairstyles you could make look like African-american hair. But those sliders didn't really work on the ladies to get them to AA features.

And absolutely NONE of the base model choices were any ethnicity other than white.

The last expansion changed all that though, at least for black people. The next expac is Cantha, which is asian-looking folks so maybe they'll upgrade the base characters again.

Yeah, I'm all like WTF on this one. I never played WoW but did hack with Everquest, Guild Wars, Rift, and a couple of others. All of those IIRC had full color spectrum. One of my first toons was purple as purple could get.

So why the F is this news? This just seems like it should be anothingberder.

Last night met a femme dorf who was teeny-tiny (ankle-biter), light grey, riding a green squirrel. So, yeah, what up with WoW?

And yet a great many games over the past 16 plus years have included facial structures of non-white people.

You have never, never been saddened/disappointed by yet another crappy pointlessly limited character creation screen? Truly? Not ever?

I played a minority for years in WoW. My alt character was a female dwarf monk.

I felt like the lone fat girl in the land of Barbie-ish elves, humans, draenei and gnomes on my server. Was a challenge to find outfits that didn't make the character appear to be a Little Person of Walmart (did sport the barefoot martial artist look though).

/WoW lady dwarves are akin to Archer's Pam Poovey, btw, but with a Scottish accent

I am saddened when a developer shiats up on obvious things like providing a half decent character creating tool (looking at you, anthem...), but it is a "well this is shiat" sadness and not a "this is an outrage!!" Sadness.

I don't think I've ever given half a damn if the creator lacked the appropriate color of brown to represent myself when creating an elf woman sorceress to play in the mythical realm of wherever.

In fantasy games, I don't even play a human the majority of the time. I play lizard people that may be red or purple or blue, elves that could be silver or green or whatever. I also almost exclusively play female characters.

I get annoyed at games like wow not because of lack of color sliders for humans. It a specific color set not being allowed on one of their race, but for being so severely limited in their facial features and body sliders. From Everquest to Horizons to Matrix Online to Dark Age of Camelot, every other MMO that came out prior to WoW had significantly more variety in character detail. WOW had stock faces. It's entirely possible they finally support sliders decades after release, I wouldn't know.

A large part of how I play characters unlike me is because there's no point to yourself being in these worlds as yourself. Also because I'm not such a simpleton that I can relate to characters who aren't exactly like me in stories, shows, movies, etc.

Purple who think they need to bring real world race issues, and worse, those who think they are intended to play themselves, fail at creativity, originality, immersion, and basical mental functioning.

People who think everyone else needs to play characters that perfectly represent their race, religion, disability, or something else are tedious people, best ignored. They have a worldview that I absolutely cannot understand.

I mean, I play weird races too, but it isn't hard to comprehend why someone would want their rl person to enjoy a fantasy world experience either.

Your well reasoned and tolerant responses are really confusing my myopic mind. Think you can act in a more stereotypical fashion before the dissonance overtakes my world view and makes me question my beliefs?

That said, am I racist for playing light skinned orcs? I need some validation.

When I was learning to read a few decades ago I went through everything with letters on that I could get; naturally the Communist newspapers and magazines being first, because that was always available.

Gave up on them pretty soon, because the overabundance of abbreviations and shortened words made it really hard to understand.

They also got quite a few of them shortened wrong.

WoW did this for technical reasons.  When it launched the game looked better and ran better than all of the MMOs you mentioned above.  Customized meshes eat up a ton of memory because you can't instance them efficiently.  At the time just having a few pre-fab ones saved a huge amount of memory (among other things) that could go into better visual effects, smoother animations, etc.

There is more to it than just that, but it is the major reason.

WoW looked cartoony, not better. Must games were going for realization to some degree. WoW went for lower poly counts and  it was also designed to be able to run on lower spec machines than other games at the time. In order to do that, they cut corners. This would be fine if it was just a setting off by default. But actually leaving it out when it was long a standard is very much indicative of Blizzard's downfall, before Activision night them out.

They is to say, I agree with half of your statement.

For Italians, Greeks, and Jews, as well as some Hispanics and Middle Easterners (like Turks and Armenians), it depends on the context. Standing next to a WASP, yes. Standing next to a black or Asian person, no.

/When being hunted by the KKK, as my grandparents were, the answer is definitely yes.
