You sell fear on the small screen non stop for a year, people are going to get concerned about their safety.
If people are concerned about their safety and you run on a "defund the police" platform, people will find the means to defend themselves.

/Might be a good time for the dnc to rethink its support for gun control.

"Emboldened racist nut bags"

I guess you could pretend things like the Charleston, South Carolina shooting are common (they aren't)

Or you could recognize there were 440 murders just in Chicago between January and July of 2020....none of which were committed by white supremacists.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-homicides-rose-by-139-percent-from-last-july-officials-say/2315318/%3famp

What do you think all those emboldened individuals who bought the guns for racist reasons are doing with the guns? Doesn't look like they're using them on other people?

I read a post somewhere today that claimed there were "200 million armed hunters" (as opposed to unarmed hunters?) in the US and that there were another 50 million who had guns but weren't hunters.

I think it was on Fox News, but it could have been somewhere else.  Do these people even realize how blatantly wrong their lies are before they tell them?

From my cursory googling, about 72 million Americans said they owned guns - There may be a few who are too paranoid to admit to pollsters that they owned them, but I'm sure it's not 180 million.

JAGChem82: deadsanta: Yeah Blacks getting massacred buy guns, so Hispanics and Asians figure they're probably next, also buy guns, and then white people see all the POC buying guns...

Pretty much just the way the NRA and manufacturers wanted it to turn out.

I get the gist of your post, but far too many liberals, until this year, have stayed away from guns/firearms ownership out of a false belief of what gun ownership means.

D pols think that the only gun owners that exist are a bunch of Cletus Confederates in camo and they actively discourage their constituents from participating in the 2A responsibly. I'm not saying they need to go air commercials with them showing off their 9 mm or AR-15, but stop letting them control the narrative about firearms ownership.

Gun ownership means owning a gun.  It means making it many times more likely that someone in your home will die from gun violence while also making it more likely you will die from a home invasion (when the intruder gets your gun) than if you didn't have a gun (which is no more or less likely to occur just because you own a gun).  It also means giving my money to a third party that makes guns and ammunition as well as the time and effort to care and maintain a weapon in proper condition.  None of that makes me safer, just poorer and more stressed.

Switzerland's "stricter gun-control laws" wouldn't put it in the 25 most-restrictive US states.

Perhaps....

My point is that gun humpers like to point to Switzerland using articles that are older than the new laws.  Or acknowledge that the Swiss population valued it's freedom of movement more than it gun freedoms.

(And before you start chewing the "gun grabber" BS, we own several long guns, (shotguns and rifles).   This country has a serious collective mental illness regarding guns.

And?

That was from 2018.   In 2019 Switzerland tightened it's gun laws.   64% of the Swiss prefer to be able to travel freely than take the "cold dead hands" stance.

https://qz.com/1623173/switzerland-approves-stricter-gun-laws-in-light-of-new-eu-rules/

So in r esponse to the 2015 Paris terrorists attacks?  That's Paris, France where gun ownership was already illegal unless a person had "a hunting license or a shooting sport license"

You know why those weren't the 2015 Geneva terrorist attacks (for example)?

Because the terrorists knew there was a lot less of a chance that anybody would shoot back to stop them in Paris.

Like somebody said earlier, Chicago already heavily restricts gun ownership. Sure doesn't prevent gun crimes from happening though does it?  You know what does?  Gun ownership.

Can you cite any examples of a guy without a gun breaking into somebody's home and then using that persons gun to harm the homeowner?

Just think about the chain of events that would have to take place for that to happen:

Unarmed guy breaks in.  Some sort of situation (?) occurs where guy breaking in discovers a gun (Keep in mind he doesn't know where it's located) before the homeowner (who does know where the gun is) has a chance to use it.

As opposed to the guy breaking  in just, you know, running away.

Do you really think things like that happen?

The basic attitude of the gun groups I participate in is, "good, but I hope they get some training".  All too often panic buyers get a gun, never get training or go to the range, then stuff it in a box in the back of the closet, completely unsecured.  In a few years they'll trade it for a $50 Target gift card at the local police gun buyback program.  It looks good on the news, but doesn't do a thing about the guns the criminals possess.

It used to common for schools to teach basic firearms and have shooting competitions with other schools.  I'm all for bringing that back.

I haven't bought ammo since last year, before this mess got going.  Fortunately, I have plenty of .45 ACP on hand and don't need to pay the inflated prices when it is available, so I'm good.

But answer the important question.  What did they get you?

That was from 2018.   In 2019 Switzerland tightened it's gun laws.   64% of the Swiss prefer to be able to travel freely than take the "cold dead hands" stance.

That's the problem. I want to go shooting, but ammo is as scarce as an honest Republican nowadays.

I'm a controlled/safe environment, yes.

I shot my first firearm when I was 6 or 7....a .22 rifle on my Grandpa's property.

I thought about it too. In fact, my wife and I had a long conversation about getting a gun. But like you, in the end, we decided it wasn't worth it.

I'll just rely on good old fashioned fisticuffs to protect myself, like I've done all my life. True, my fists can't stop bullets. But they'll give you one hell of a shiner and a bloody nose!

As seen in in both Kenosha and Denver, add a gun and things get more complicated.

I can promise you no one bought a gun from a gun shop in Chicago last year.

Exactly my point.  Not sure why subby (and some commenters) is trying to pretend Californians buying guns is some kind of problem

(It's not the legally purchased ones anybody should worry about)

I grew up in Montana in a big family of hunters on both sides, mostly the menfolk, but because my mom wouldn't allow guns in the house and my dad wasn't a big hunting fan anyway, I subsequently never really got into it.

At the same time, I have a lot of respect for my hunter family members because they do it the right way - all of them get proper firearm training at a very young age, they self-police themselves on proper gun safety, especially my uncles, if you even think of acting stupid around a gun, they will bring down the hammer, which is being ostracized from the group until you not only repent, but become a proper teacher yourself. My cousin was basically banned from hunting with his brothers for two years for some stupid shiat when he was a kid and now, to see him grown up, after learning his lesson and accepting his punishment and with his own boys showing them the right way is really cool.

They also follow all the rules, are respectful of the land they hunt on - which is usually private ranch land where they need to build trust and rapport with the land owners - and they eat what they kill. If the shiat hit the fan, I'd head over to their place and hunker down.

I don't like guns at all, but I also live 3 miles from where George Floyd was killed. I'm not going to lie, I thought about getting a gun. I didn't, but I thought about it longer than ever thought I would. It's stupid, but shiat goes through your head sometimes.

Well yeah, there's a reason that select-fire weapons that give you the option to choose between burst and full-auto would be hard to get, in any state.

I suppose in California they think that's a lot but they have a long way to go to catch up with Texas...
