con_fuse9: 1) The fear that it will get harder to buy guns in the near future (esp assault style rifles). <= That's the increase

That fear comes up every election and never materializes. God bless the gun marketers.

Basic firearm safety training should be required the same way sex-ed should be required.

If it were up to me, both would be mandatory high school classes.

GrizzlyPouch: Bslim: The United States is populated by idiots who think E V E R Y T H I N Gcan be solved with a gun.

You know in Switzerland all men fit for service between 18 and 34 are actually given guns by the government and taught how to use them.  But you know those crazy Europeans, they're more backwoods than the average Mississippian

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/switzerland-gun-laws-rates-of-gun-deaths-2018-2%3famp

That's kind of true. More and more are opting for civil service in lieu of military - it might be a majority now - but even more significant is that the ones opting for civil service or who are unfit (minus mentally / criminally) are still allowed to purchase guns by Swiss federal statute!!

If you're interested I'm happily to link to respective Swiss gov pages!

I managed to snag four boxes of 45-70 today I'm now ready for anything up to and including velociraptor attack.

My Sober Alt: I read a post somewhere today that claimed there were "200 million armed hunters" (as opposed to unarmed hunters?) in the US and that there were another 50 million who had guns but weren't hunters.

I think it was on Fox News, but it could have been somewhere else.  Do these people even realize how blatantly wrong their lies are before they tell them?

From my cursory googling, about 72 million Americans said they owned guns - There may be a few who are too paranoid to admit to pollsters that they owned them, but I'm sure it's not 180 million.

[Fark user image image 480x273]

I'm pretty sure most gun-owners are not hunters, and lots (maybe most) gun-owners wouldn't tell a pollster anything.

con_fuse9: Now personally, I've never had a need or want for an assault style rifle, but they seem to be getting harder and harder to get in my state.

Well yeah, there's a reason that select-fire weapons that give you the option to choose between burst and full-auto would be hard to get, in any state.
/I know what you meant.

"Emboldened racist nut bags"

I guess you could pretend things like the Charleston, South Carolina shooting are common (they aren't)

Or you could recognize there were 440 murders just in Chicago between January and July of 2020....none of which were committed by white supremacists.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-homicides-rose-by-139-percent-from-last-july-officials-say/2315318/%3famp

Yep, every firearm is *always* loaded, until you, yourself, verify that it is *not* loaded. Just because that Glock is sitting on the ground, with the slide back and the magazine well empty, does *not* mean that there is not a round still in the chamber, waiting for some idiot to work the slide closed and pull the trigger and get surprised when the *bang* sound happens.

I grew up in Montana in a big family of hunters on both sides, mostly the menfolk, but because my mom wouldn't allow guns in the house and my dad wasn't a big hunting fan anyway, I subsequently never really got into it.

At the same time, I have a lot of respect for my hunter family members because they do it the right way - all of them get proper firearm training at a very young age, they self-police themselves on proper gun safety, especially my uncles, if you even think of acting stupid around a gun, they will bring down the hammer, which is being ostracized from the group until you not only repent, but become a proper teacher yourself. My cousin was basically banned from hunting with his brothers for two years for some stupid shiat when he was a kid and now, to see him grown up, after learning his lesson and accepting his punishment and with his own boys showing them the right way is really cool.

They also follow all the rules, are respectful of the land they hunt on - which is usually private ranch land where they need to build trust and rapport with the land owners - and they eat what they kill. If the shiat hit the fan, I'd head over to their place and hunker down.

I don't like guns at all, but I also live 3 miles from where George Floyd was killed. I'm not going to lie, I thought about getting a gun. I didn't, but I thought about it longer than ever thought I would. It's stupid, but shiat goes through your head sometimes.

Libby lib lib here. I'd far rather have the tools and not need them, then vice-versa. Wanted to get a rifle as well, but I was happy to settle on a 45 chambered XDM and a Mossberg 590A1. Full disclosure, I used to shoot when I was younger.

CC is a state right where I live here in Maine, so there was no filling out any extra paperwork. Picked up a Galco Miami II harness which fits nicely, and more importantly is safe to use. The 590A1 lives in this, so there's no questions when I'm headed out to the range to practice:

I thought about it too. In fact, my wife and I had a long conversation about getting a gun. But like you, in the end, we decided it wasn't worth it.

I'll just rely on good old fashioned fisticuffs to protect myself, like I've done all my life. True, my fists can't stop bullets. But they'll give you one hell of a shiner and a bloody nose!

Do you know a better way to teach them how to be safe?

I bet there were a lot of parents who said, "you want to teach kids how to put on a condom?" Probably still are.

Of course, sex-ed is not exactly "hands-on" (or at least mine wasn't). No need for gun-safety to be.

I get the gist of your post, but far too many liberals, until this year, have stayed away from guns/firearms ownership out of a false belief of what gun ownership means.

D pols think that the only gun owners that exist are a bunch of Cletus Confederates in camo and they actively discourage their constituents from participating in the 2A responsibly. I'm not saying they need to go air commercials with them showing off their 9 mm or AR-15, but stop letting them control the narrative about firearms ownership.
