Having done it myself, I can say that the impressiveness of being a "college professor" is overrated. It's just teaching. Still, good for him.

Spiffy indeed. He came so close to taking Lyin' Ted's seat away from him.
That would have been glorious.
We gotta take this country back from the crazies, or else we're not gonna have a country anymore.

If he doesn't stand on his desk while giving lectures, I'll be very disappointed.

It's all in how you do it, I suppose. Tough to look at the record of someone near retirement with 500+ papers and a couple of books published in an experimental science and say it was just teaching. Although, the type of appointments referenced in the article often don't even include much teaching, so your point is pretty reasonable.

Beto O'flameout is more like it.

Hopefully he doesn't get back into politics, but he's still young and has a billionaire father in law, so I think another run is likely.

I hate this. Instructor, sure. Professor, no. There's a lot to do to get that title, and he hasn't done it.

I'm sorry, the cheapening academic credentials is a sore subject with me.

I'm with you. My girlfriend's mom is a professor. She would probably beat me to death with her published works if she heard me call someone with a BA a professor.

He would be a much better professor.

/Beto is a tyrant wannabe.

It's a Texas State University thing. It's perfectly cromulent.

Pretty sure his "Hell yeah, we're gonna take your AR-15" pretty much keeps him out of office for the next decade or so.

Glad to hear he's teaching. Dude is super smart and passionate.

I can't help wondering if this will hurt his chances  of being elected in Texas.

Dude's getting tired at his age of being full time on the road.  Needs a regular job with benefits.  Good for him.

Now if he can just avoid the cliche college instructor and undergrad scenarios.

Currently college faculty in the DC region. I can tell you that ASSISTANT professor is moderately hard to get, but full PROFESSOR as a credential is reserved for the long time experienced faculty. We had the CHAIR just get full professor like last year, after 18 years.

Do tell.  Of what guild are you the master?

It's a childhood pseudonym from a RPG I clumsily designed when I was 12.

IRL, I'm a STEM professor. So yeah, it bothers me when someone is handed a credential I worked for that is supposed to mean expertise (both breadth and depth of field) in a subject, backed up by rigorous, peer-reviewed research. I have no problem with instructors being from "life experience", like Beto has. There are many colleagues of mine who are actually better teachers than the professors are. But they're *not* academic experts in the same fashion, and Beto certainly isn't. There's a qualitative difference.

Yep. I'm a college professor. The requirements were a Master's degree and at least three years' experience in the field to be taught. I'm not sure if I will teach another semester, the experience has been a mixed bag with the negatives mostly coming from the school.

And I get that honestly
I've been an academic librarian. two masters (MLS and a subject) gets you tenure track and the same pay scale as the teaching faculty
What it does not get you is the right to be called professor, even if you are teaching information literacy classes. Because in many 4 year universities teaching faculty have doctoral degrees.
A PhD means original work that makes contributions to the field. Masters usually don't require that

Nah. PJ O'Rourke is actually intelligent, puts across his argument clearly and concisely, and has an excellent sense of humor.

We are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, me and PJ. But I have read at least 3 or 4 of his books, and I used to love the stuff he wrote for Rolling Stone (mostly travel stuff to places you mostly wouldn't want to travel to.)

Limbaugh, on the other hand, is an idiotic, bloated gas bag who wreaks of Funyuns and flop sweat.
