Eventually our media outlets will have to start acting responsibly if we're going to save our country, but that notion goes against unbridled capitalism and therefore the very foundation of the country.

NBC News has hired an outside third-party firm to independently identify many of the attendees at tonight's Miami town hall to ensure that they represent a true cross section of voters, one of the NBC sources told POLITICO.

You mean like the "Undecided, Leaning Biden" woman who said Trump "is so handsome when he smiles" and looked like she came out of a central casting search for a MAGA rally attendee?

Yeah, great "research firm" folks.

They did reward Trump. Presidential candidates now have a precedent to avoid debates.

When all is said and done, NBC did a good thing giving Trump* a little more rope set on his shoulder.
Results matter more than feelings.
If only ANTIFA were fully functional they could "monitor" next Thursdays' flaming dumpster show.
Fascism in USA was alive and growing before WWII. The only thing saved us was not being isolated from allies on the world stage.

It also led to a Twitter mob engaging in a "Fire Chuck Todd" social media campaign directed at the "Meet The Press" host and NBC News political director. But Todd had no involvement in either town hall.

Can we just always do the opposite of what the moron Twitter Mob demands?  I think we'd all be better off.

Trump had the opportunity to be in a town hall with Biden last night but he declined.

I was pissed as well when I heard but Biden did great and Trump did himself no favors so it worked out in the end.

My favorite part of that article was at the end.

fta: "It also led to a Twitter mob engaging in a "Fire Chuck Todd" social media campaign directed at the "Meet The Press" host and NBC News political director. But Todd had no involvement in either town hall."

So?

As far as Fark goes... around here everyday is #FireChuckTodd Day.

You don't need a special occassion.

Yeah, the biggest takeaway from that town hall was his refusal to denounce QAnon.

That will not do him any favors outside the QAnon bubble.

I don't understand why anyone other than Trump supporters are complaining. NBC gave him rope and he gladly hung himself. Hell, he was practically in a hurry to do it. If you're behind in the polls and needing to win the support of suburban women, you don't fight with and talk over the female host of the Today show. That's not a good strategy.

Oppenheim, where have I heard that name before...

In 2017, it was Oppenheim's idea to put Ronan Farrow on the story about the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations, which were credited with starting the Me Too movement; NBC News ultimately, however, failed to publish it, a decision Farrow blamed on Oppenheim.[17][18] Farrow took the story to The New Yorker which published it soon afterwards.[19][20]
The NBC News organization and Oppenheim were criticized for not publishing the Weinstein story, criticism that intensified when news broke of the sexual harassment claims against Matt Lauer.[13][21] Ronan Farrow later said that Oppenheim played a major role in refusing to allow NBC News to report on those allegations in 2017. Oppenheim denied Farrow's claim and said that the reason NBC News chose not to report on the story was that the available evidence did not meet their journalistic standards.[17] However, other accounts of contemporary discussions within NBC News are consistent with Oppenheim preventing NBC journalists from reporting on Weinstein.[17] Oppenheim denied that NBC hid the Matt Lauer accusations over the years and calls Farrow's book a "smear" though many on his staff remain skeptical.[22] Farrow also reported that NBC News hired a "Wikipedia whitewasher" who removed references to NBC's role in the Weinstein case from several Wikipedia articles, including Oppenheim's.[2

When will the true ratings be known for the separate town halls?

Bsh! Who am I kidding? We know no matter what the ratings say, trump will lie and say his was the bestest evar! and that Biden didn't even register on any ratings scale.

The Town Hall was necessitated by Trump's refusal to debate virtually. Why should he be rewarded for his recalcitrance with an hour of prime time?

It's like the moron who thought comparing it to Mister Roger's Neighborhood was a bad thing.

I also don't get why people say Stephanopoulos was easy on Biden.

He didn't let him dodge the court packing question and got the most concrete answer we've seen from Biden so far on the issue.

They both got an invitation to the same debate. Trump refused to follow the rules, pulled out of the debate, and then was rewarded for his toddlerfit by NBC.

Early network ratings had Biden's ABC Town Hall with about 2 million more viewers, but those numbers are subject to change and don't include CNBC & MSNBC for Trump so it may all come out in the wash.

Either way, Trump did himself no favors with anyone who watched his performance.

It was a pure bullshiat move. On the off-chance that somebody from the right would've watched the Biden Townhall, instead turned to NBC to watch their little fearless leader. Sure, they could've acted responsibly and scheduled it at a different time slot than Biden, but there was money to be made! It's not like trump already gets virtually unlimited free airtime on Fox.

Yep. The GOP is a personality cult party now, and there's no limit to how openly fascist a candidate they'll push so long as they have the kind of charisma that can whip the chuds into a frenzy like Trump does.

There's going to need to be a lot more done to vindicate NBC. Hari-kari services on The Today Show and Morning Joe would make for fair starters.

Biden should have to report that to the FEC as an in-kind contribution to his campaign.  Every minute Donnie is on TV beclowning himself is a small victory for the Biden/Harris campaign.

Yeah.  I would note that what the article is describing, is the state of internal network strife before the event.  I wonder if Guthrie's performance might not have taken some of the pressure off, both from inside and outside the office, as of this morning.

In hindsight, it's difficult to say that they did Trump any particular favors apart from the time slot.

The Biden Town Hall was a response to Trump backing out of the agreed-to Town Hall because it was gonna be virtual (since he got COVID and would be a danger to others)

Then NBC was all "hey buddy, it's cool, come on our show and do 60 minutes for the forst 60 of Biden's 90-minute Town Hall" but then they snuck in a Nasty Woman to moderate.

I feel like this was one of those Malicious Compliance things, but maybe it was just luck that the shorter, contentious Trump Town Hall made WATB look like a WATB in front of everyone, and then those viewers switched over to ABC to see a calm, concerned, smart and together person field tough questions and follow-ups
