No, no, no and no.

Humans will pack bond with anything. It doesn't matter how impersonal or alien you make your virtual assistants, people are going to treat them like they're people, and will assign them a gender whether you have or not.

When we meet the Galactic Federation, we're going to come off as weirdly clingy/kinky.

ROBOSEXUALITY IS NOT NATURAL

I'm from New York. If Alexa scolded people for being rude I'd never get anything out of her.

/not that I use voice commands for anything to begin with

Shouldn't it be their choice?
Assuming at least human level A.I..

How do you make a robot without ANY accent?

Once it's triggered and has delivered my results it shouldn't be listening actively.
It's not a living being and doesn't have any emotion, why would I thank it?
I don't thank my screwdriver for working.

Siri and Alexa have more personality than God does, but God is constantly getting more 'thanks'.

Build them in Seattle?

No and no.

Of course this is the probably the perennial: "Women's voices in tech devices is sexist!" and simultaneously "Why aren't more devices using women's voices? That's sexist!" dueling articles.

I like Female Australian Siri the best. Unless I want accurate driving directions, then I switch it to boy siri

My default male Siri has a Rastafarian accent.

I mean... do they need to?  No.

Is anything of value lost if you give them one, e.g. when you give an automated assistant a voice actor with a distinctive gender?  Also no.

This is sort of a textbook example of something not mattering either way.

Sure, there were initially varying reactions from customers polled after test-driving with voiced GPSes or whatever in studies conducted in the farking 1990s and early '00s, but that kind of response is a learned one, not innate, and people have been dealing with voice-mediated systems in both directions for so long that there's a generation of full-on adults with jobs and shiat who literally cannot remember a time when voice transcription was typically unreliable.

Trust me, we got over reacting to automated voices on the instinctive assumption that they were an actual person a long time ago, there are loads of our generation's equivalent of radio shows where a character or the entire show is in straight-up neutral Microsoft blind person accessibility voice and no one complains they can't follow.  The only thing anyone cares about is whether they can tell it's a robot or not (they prefer to know they're talking to an automated system, which is why Siri is intentionally muddled with clearly artificial tones, for instance).

Maybe there will be a repeat of this learning process for physical morphology when that becomes a thing, but (1) I'm skeptical that it will and (2) we'll get over that in less than half a decade, too, if the devices are widespread enough.

I always say please. Sometimes I remember to say thank you. When the robots take over, I hope they remember that and let me live, at least for a little while.

Can we stop giving woo-artists attention. There are real and important problems in the world right now without worrying about stupid shiat like how your smartphone self identifies. When you peddle woo like this you end up diminishing the real problems by having them associated with your woo.

Have you forgotten where you are?

I think it's hilarious but also sad that not only do I do that exact same thing, but I think the same thing when I'm doing it.

I'm not pan, so my sex-bot needs a gender.

I do. My cats also get greetings as I walk past them.

I also tend to talk to things when reorganizing or cleaning; "You go here, you go here, you wait here for now, you go there, now you go back."

Although now that I think about it, I might just need to get out more.

Well, if you build them to look like teenage au pairs, folks are probably going to consider them female.

Is this really a question?

Of course robots will have gender because without gender, what's the point of a sex robot?

And if you think there won't be sex robots, you probably think there is no porn on the internet.

All robots already have gender and ethnicity. Both of which are, interestingly enough, "robot."
They are also all robosexual as well. Even the sexbots. Especially the sexbots.  They do it because they are programmed, not because they prefer it.

In my books and stories, any sapient robot that is big enough to, by design, hold other creatures in it is female (buildings, cities, space stations, ships, etc) and any that aren't are male. This is primarily for linguistic purposes, as their sexuality is pretty much agendered and non-physical.

/Except for those pervy humanophiles.
//The first sex scene I ever wrote was between a spaceship and twin brother robots
///The twins (clones of the same base AI) didn't have sex with each other, you sicko
