Damn.  Well.  It couldn't have been easy being a Chiefs fan for all those years prior to 2019.  Enjoy it.

Just remember, a decade from now, they'll be back to starting rejected San Francisco QBs :)

As Ochocinco said on Twitter:

If Le'veon Bell goes to the Chiefs we might as well send them the Lombardi trophy, as a viable threat from the backfield & slot as a receiver this signing is similar to Thanos getting the last Infinity Stone. (speaking from an offensive perspective w/ a creative coordinator)

I wouldn't exactly go crazy about this just yet. How bad to have to suck to be cut by the Jets?

I know Bell has a history of being disgruntled, but I put this on Gase. He comes off as incompetent and insufferable.

Awesome. We have no second string as they've all decided to play like shiat.

This should be swell. Even if he is off, hopefully playing behind/with CEH will get him going without so much pressure.

I wanted to get to use a Le'Veon Bills headline.

2020-10-15 11:37:54 PM
Reid and Bieniemy seem to have a good touch with the offense, and there's no question this is Mahomes' team so the pecking order is pretty clearly set in cement.  It'll be interesting to see how Bell does in this dynamic as opposed to where he's coming from.

2020-10-15 11:58:57 PM
He's all yours.

Objectively, I don't see where he fits in. They already have a plethora of riches. He won't be starting at running back, and he can't compete with their receivers, so the two things he is valued for are already covered. I'm sure he'll be pleased if they get a ring, but he's a rental because he's going to want to play and there's no spot for him. My guess is that's why he's only signed for this year.

But whatever. He gave up a stellar career for money, this is nothing in comparison. At least this time he landed with a team that won't get him killed like the Jets.

Of course the Jets would be responsible for this

Good luck next year Trevor

This was a very Patriots-like move.

Motivated former All Pro on a vet minimum contract for 11+ games? If it works, great. If not, he's Shady McCoy last year and just fades away during the season.

KC has been awful in short-yardage situations ever since Mahomes hurt his knee and they no longer let him keep it and run up the middle.

This is why, despite all the league's efforts to create "parity", dynasties still exist in the NFL.   The three finalists for Bell's services offered him very different things, almost like the story of Paris and the apple in Greek Myth:

The Dolphins offered him a truckload of money since they have vast salary cap room
The Bills offered him carries, promising he'd be the featured back for a team on the rise
But the Chiefs? They offered him Respect. A very real chance to get a Superbowl ring

Bell HAD money, thanks to the Huge contract the Jets gave him
Bell is 28 and Running Backs have the shortest careers of any "skill player" in the NFL
But a Ring for a 3/4 of year's work?   Well now that's attractive.

and that's what the Pats and Chiefs can always offer proven players that say  the Nameless Team never could and so they get very good players like Terrell Suggs for a song

OkieDookie: Meet Kareem Hunt 2.0 Chiefs fans.  Are his off field antics worth the on field performance?

Well since arguably they'd have TWO rings with Hunt given how the AFC championship played out...

I'm still more than a little concerned about the whole "character issue" as it applies to pro sports.   A player is hired to do a job, and if they do it well, why doesn't the inquiry stop there.   We don't seem to judge the "off field" activities of our CEOs or lately, even our presidents, but we are very quick to condemn athletes who get in trouble, LONG before the facts of the situation are really established the legal process has played itself out"

and Given the relative lack of outrage about the fact that Ben Rothliesburger actually raped a woman and got the cops to cover for him  but player like Hunt got fired for a minor (but despicable) assault, well, I can't help but wonder how much the fact that most athletes are African American plays into this equation

That statement is full of irony. Ben was never even charged with a crime, but you said he "actually raped" somebody right after saying about letting the legal process playing out.

That said, times have changed. Ben would have been released if that had happened today or any time in the last couple of years, guilty or not.

Part of the reason the Eagles ended up with a ring is because Gase decided he didn't like Jay Ajayi.

Ben absolutely, positively raped a woman. There were witnesses. There was a rape kit. It is almost as much of a slam-dunk case as the Kobe Bryant rape case and that's because in that case, Kobe published a statement through his lawyer explicitly admitting to rape.

This.  I am usually the "reserve judgment guy" having worked as a defense lawyer, but those same experiences make me 100% comfortable stating as fact that the girl ws raped.   The key to me is the rape accusation happened IMMEDIATELY after the encounter.  She stumbled out of a room that had been locked and guarded by Big Ben's "bodyguard" and SAID she was raped.  Period. full stop.   Her friends IMMEDIATELY flagged down the cops and reported the rape.    Cops Investigated it as such until the bodyguard, who was also a state trooper started Obstructing justice in a major way, destroying evidence, delaying access tot eh crime scene and the Perp, and trying to chase the investigators away from investigating, a stall tactic that lasted long enough fro Ben's lawyer to reach out the Vic and threaten her and offer her a life-changing amount of money to "withdraw her cooperation" which she did.

It's funny to me how many people state "Ray Lewis was a Murderer"  as incontrovertible fact when the evidence in that case show 1) he wasn't the one with either knife and 2) No actual murders took place. (Jury found self defense for both men charged. Lewis was the only on to do jail time)   but say it's "ambiguous" what happened with Ben

Most teams can deal with one headcase (if he is indeed one) when you have more than one it gets dicey.

2020-10-16 1:08:02 PM
Well, maybe now the Chiefs can properly use Clyde's hands instead of running him up the middle without the benefit of an effective O-line.

This is a one year deal. Probably only cost the team a million or two because the Jets paid him already. It is like hiring Shady last year, except Bell is still in his prime.

As a defense lawyer you probably also know that the rape bell can't be un-rung. If the DA had the evidence he needed to convict he would have buried him, no matter what the accuser says afterward. It's not like he was a local celebrity that he felt some desire to protect. As he said, he prosecuted crimes, not morals. I am absolutely willing to agree that Ben was, and may still be, an absolute scumbag. As for the rest, I'm not so sure it's as settled as you think it is.

As for Ray Lewis, two people died under very suspicious circumstances, Ray "lost" the suit he was wearing, there was a cover-up significant enough to put him in the hoosegow, and he was scared enough of the murder charges to roll over on the other two guys who got off precisely because of the obstruction. But none of that really matters, because if I have to deal with people calling Ben a rapist every time the Steelers are mentioned you can certainly deal with people calling Ray Lewis a murderer.

How long before he challenges Andy Reid in the papers?
