Also not Swedish, but that's not as important.

So that's Australia, Japan, and now Sweden announcing major increases to their military budgets this year. Turkey has expeditionary forces in 4 neighboring countries. China is making noise about Taiwan again, and has already incorporated Hong Kong. Poland is looking around like a skinhead in a moshpit; aggressive and paranoid, but confused and hesitant because no one's punched them yet.

America has fewer troops deployed abroad now than it has at any time in the last 90 years, but that has more of a "heavily armed nutcase going into a bunker to pick a fight with his brother," feel to it than a "job well done, see you all later," feel.

Which is all to say, we're going to see a lot of maps full of flags and arrows this decade.

I had a Swedish uncle who worked on a submarine in the 1970s. When I went to visit him a few years back-- it was a great trip, incidentally-- I said to him that I'd heard in the early 1980s, there were a number of mystery submarine incidents which took place around the borders of Sweden. People had supposed they were Russian attempts to test infiltration techniques on a non-NATO country.

He laughed at the question said "In 1979, that's when I left the navy-- and that's when the Russians came."

In the absence of strong American leadership the rest of the world is starting to arm themselves in response to other actors flexing in their regions.

This historically never ends well.

FYI as a fraction of GDP that is : Military expenditure (% of GDP) in Sweden was reported at 1.1206 % in 2019. And this: tefan Löfven's SDP-led government adopted new measures in 2017 to increase annual spending on the military from about $4.7 billion to $6.6 billion by 2019. Under the spending plan supported by the Alliance, defense expenditure would grow year on year after 2019, reaching $8 billion by 2024 .

So if this is an additional 3 bil. Are we talking 1.12 x ( 3 + 6.6 ) / 6.6 = 1.63 % of GDP. Assuming GDP stays the same.

USA is at 3.4%

Point of order: While they did a remarkable job of kicking in Russian dicks, Finland did lose the Winter War.

Yeah but it was Pyrrhic victory for the Russians, which is it's own win considering how out numbered they were.

Sweden actually has a fairly robust defense industry, and Saab makes a pretty damn good fighter jet.

They got the coastal land (and then some) that they started the war over.

Considering the USSR's goal was the communist take-over of Finland (they already had a puppet government ready to move in), most people wouldn't call it a loss for Finland.

True, and at least a couple jets in service have been developed by a whole consortium of countries.  Which makes it all the more impressive that Sweden competes with them, considering how small a country it is.

A family friend is in the Swedish defense ministry he is pretty pumped for this. He and his staff have been pushing for this for a long time and a stronger defense ties in general. He also recently publish a analyst of Russian and Chinese actions to counter US power which was pretty interesting.

He is personally in favor of it, however there is a deeply set 'non alignment' faction inside the Swedish government and military power blocks. He has been an active advocate for years though and things that opinions on both fronts are changing in favor of requesting admission sometime in the future.

I can tell you what they are thinking in Sweden (and elsewhere in Europe): the USA is going to fall into a civil war and Russia is going to take back parts of Europe while the USA is occupied and cannot help its allies.
