Two of my favorites - Thai sticky rice with Mango, and kashata - are on the list. Yeah!

USA has better things than doughnuts. Appalachian Apple Stack Cake, for instance.

Yeah. Key lime pie is my favorite. The lemon tart in the link will suffice.

I also don't like sweets, but that doesn't mean I won't smash a good cookie, or cheesecake, or sweet pie. I much prefer meat and pasta and salt and savory, but damn sometimes a snickers bar just calls out to me dude

I miss alfajores. The Argentine ones kick Chile's ass.

Subs, I immediately went trolling thru' my friendface for the time I bought entirely too many dozen dan-tat for the nephews. but before I found that, I came across this lemon curd, so... I'll take it!

"Serial Kitchen Experiments, Dorian Secret Conspiracy Lab Version -
Rule 39: Trust me, a good custard will cover any multitude of sins.
Rule 15: A blender is surprisingly good at ricing cauliflower, and unsurprisingly terrible at cutting short-pastry."

"(cont.)
39b: Of course, custard has its own particular litany of sins.
39c: Powdered sugar sort of covers up other sins."

/dadgammit, now I just want dan-tat.
//not sure what I were drankin' in that photo but I'm guessing rum-fizz?

yeah, so... the demons in my unrepentant neurotic jackass tiny-mind remained compelled to dig for the dan-tat from that one time.

NOTHING on this list sounds bad, but it seems a tiny touch heavy on "flakey pastries with nutty, honeyed or syrupy fillings":

Baklava
Borma
Cornes de Gazelle
M'hanncha
Ma'amoul

to me, those all sound like lucious, yummy, variations on one dessert, just as i'd claim "fried dough" covers:

Doughnuts
Gulab Jamun
Mandazi
Oliebollen

or "cream-stuffed-pastries":

Cannoli
Dan Tats
Qatayef

don't get me wrong, i'd eat all 50 on this list, but does anyone else feel like we're missing whole "categories" of world desserts?

like maybe things aggressively fruit based? -fruit pies and crumbles?

sugar based candies? chocolate truffles? wild "one-offs" like nothing else on earth?

i feel like something got missed....

any suggestions fellow farkers?

Well, my favorite American-style dessert is cheesecake brownies, and the list contained both brownies and cheesecake... Though I'm admittedly a big fan of donuts too. I can't stand any kind of tree nuts (or peanuts, or coconut), which definitely makes baking a challenge sometimes.

/being from TX, I will eat damned near anything deep fried

I mean, it's dessert. Regardless of origin, it's usually pretty good.

Smelly Pirate Hooker: I mean, it's dessert. Regardless of origin, it's usually pretty good.

Exactly, there is no best. Only what you have a hankering for. A good cheesecake gives me full body chills though.

Also try this for an upgrade to your chocolate chip cookie game: Use morsels instead of chips and a bag of Heath Bar bits either in addition to the morsels or instead of nuts. . . If you are a freak who put nuts in your chocolate chip cookies.

You're welcome.

pizzelle > tiramisu.

my list, in no particular order:

Tres Leche cake
Creme Brûlée
Baklava
Cheesecake
Carrot cake
Chocolate Mousse
Rice pudding (in all it's global incarnations)

I once had a coworker from Argentina who one day brought in a bunch of Alfajores for the office. Those things are awesome.

At more than one job, I've had coworkers from Mexico who brought in Tres Leches cakes for someone's birthday. Also awesome.

I've had a bunch more that were on the list. A few of them were so obvious that it was almost starting to look like clickbait.

Glenford: No pizzelle? Fail.

pizzelle > tiramisu.

Whoa there, whoa. I loves me some anise (*snk*) cookies, but even my scandinavian relative's iron-pressed versions... awesome that they are, are like bringing a knife to a culinary gunfight when pitted against tiramisu.

They all look good but I lean to a more simple dessert that usually contains fresh fruit in someway .
I love a simple strawberry shortcake, warm cake, fresh strawberries and a kick ass whip cream.  Or give me a simple crepe with fruit or fruit compote with whip cream.  Heck, one of my favs is a simple chocolate mousse .. mmm i'm  hungry now

ace in your face: Nata not maya.

pastel de nata IS on there. just listed as the global variation Dan Tats (Hong Kong).

as i said above, this isn't a list of "50 best" global desserts.

it's a (pretty great) list of regional variants of what appears to be a semi-universal but smaller list of best loved desserts, seen from a western/western colonial angle.

and it's flat out missing full "categories" -like fresh fruit desserts. and it leans very heavily on flakey wheat-based pastries, yet somehow fully skips most pies/crumbles/crisps.

anyway, it was interesting to see so many cultural variants of "the best dessert" on one list.

Yeah, I said it deserved it's own legit mention. I haven't had the knock off version, but it doesn't look as good as the ones in Lisbon. And I agree, this is a poorly compiled list, lacking both specific locations and also large categories of treats. It's essentially some girl saying her favorites. And Black Forest cake is disgusting.

uhhh, i'd personally be VERY hesitant to call Dan Tats the (strongly implied inferior) "knock off version" -particularly if i hadn't ever even tasted it to do a real first-taste-bud comparison.

but, hey, that's just me.

i also noted the STRONG western colonial legacy seen in this list, above.

perhaps you subscribe to the philosophy of "only REAL european versions are yummy! white people are simply better bakers!" or some such other nonsense i just made up about you? like you made up the taste of things from internet pictures? but hey now, you do you.

i'm more inclined to want to share the sweets love. to say, "hey guess what? all homo sapiens sapiens pretty much evolved to enjoy sweet high calorie food, it fattened us up for healthy breeding and for long winters..."

sweets enjoyed worldwide should bring us together, not show us that "the (european) ORIGINAL is always best."

CONAN! WHAT IS BEST DESSERT IN LIFE?
To crush your pineapples, see them layered with cream cheese, whipped cream, and graham cracker crumbs before you, and to hear the admiration of the women.

since this thread is still open, I wanted to say I want to try every single possible variation of the baklavas.

but also I'ma hafta come back with a truly beloved childhood favorite! dobestorte/dobosh-torte/Dobos-tort. kind of like if you made a millefeuiile, except bigger and angrier. my mother would cook each layer by flipping your standart cake-tin upside down and pouring a thin layer of batter on the underside. wild stuff!

just... thank you for that. (and Portugal was molesting the South China Sea in, what, the 16th century?)

I was upset about the "knock off" comment, but did not know how to respond, so thank you again. I have some strong personal connection to dan-tat, so yeah I got opinions but that never stopped me from trying different versions of the stuff!

we need to try ALL OF THE THINGS - agreed, it should only bring us together.
