Well, to be fair, it's not like the Palestinian leadership has ever made any serious advances towards peace here in recent years.

/ Stealing foreign aid into their own bank accounts. Having a low-grade civil war between Fatah and Hamas. Pointlessly firing rockets at Tel Aviv even though they know it will only provoke a deadly response. Educating their children in schools to hate Israel rather than to pursue peace. Using their own people as human shields and then pointing to pictures of the dead bodies to get condemnations of Israeli brutality in the foreign press. Need I go on? As the recent peace overtures between various Arab countries and Israel show, the entire Arab world is sick of the Palestinians and their bullshiat.

Which ones?  The ones under siege in Gaza?  Or the ones being marginalized in the West Bank?  Or the ones being bombed in Lebanon?

There's quite a few to choose from, and Israel is working hard to make more.

And by the way, I'm center-left in Israeli politics. But I will you tell you why elections have led to right-wing Israeli governments for decades.

In the early 2000s, PM Ehud Barak basically gave Arafat 99% of what he allegedly wanted in negotiations. He refused and left. Then, he unleashed the Second Intifada that led to countless suicide bombings against Israeli civilians.

That scarred the Israeli public deeply. As a result, they basically decided that the peace process was a fraud, that the Palestinians will never want peace, and that "the left" was to blame. As a result, we have had right-wing governments ever since. Countless Israelis I know will never vote for "the left" because they fear a return to such violence.

Basically, the Palestinians were negotiating in bad faith. And Israelis have never forgiven them.

I'm center-left in Israeli politics, and I still remember hearing air raid sirens go off at 6 am and then every few hours during the most recent war with Gaza a few years ago. I remember running to bomb shelters all the time. And it was all their farking fault because there was no need to kidnap and kill Israeli kids at the time. They gained nothing.

Israel has tried to make peace. The Palestinians, for myriad reasons, cannot. Fark them. Wake us up when they are ready. They have no real leaders who are willing to make the sacrifices and tell the truth to their own people about the need to compromise. Israel tried.

Israel pushed W to insist on free and fair elections in Gaza in 2006, and that was a masterstroke.  It neatly divided the Palestinians into two irreconcilable camps.  They'll end up bulldozing Gaza into the Med sometime around 2070.

That's because the Palestinians only real "condition" is the destruction of Israel and its people.  They'll never be satisfied until Israel ceases to exist.

It's not like they've made this a secret.  It's basically the founding principle of Hamas.

Remember the scene in Independence Day?

President: "What is you want us to do?""  Alien: "Diieee"

You can't really negotiate with that.

After the Palestinian civil war, Hamas is in charge of the Gaza Strip but is not part of the official Palestinian government.

Meanwhile, I have a student stuck in Gaza since the US government won't approve a visa for him- he has to do all his classes online which is a pain because they only get power a few hours a day.  I can't even ship a cheap telescope to him for a class assignment since the Israelis will simply block it at the border.  Hell, he can't even get a jacket across the border.

People in the US are trying to kidnap Governors because they are being required to wear a mask.  What do you think they'd do with 1/10th the restrictions my student is living with?

It's very, very simple. If Hamas would stop trying to destroy Israel, then the two could enter into negotiations. The blockade could be lifted. But Hamas does not want to recognize Israel's right to exist.

And perhaps if Israel wasn't explicitly trying to push the Palestinians off their land and force them into ghettos the Palestinians might be willing to talk.

But of course, it's effectively official Israeli government policy, supported by the US, to do exactly that.

Again, ask y'all Qaeda how they'd take that.  I'm sure they'd be totally peaceful and willing to negotiate, right?

Seriously? Here are some facts.

Before 1967, the West Bank was Jordanian land. Before 1967, the Gaza Strip was Egyptian land.

After 1967, Israel offered to give that land back to Jordan and Egypt. What did they say? "NO FARKING WAY." They did not want to deal with those assholes.

No, I'm saying that both Israel and Egypt blockade the Gaza Strip because of security concerns. But only one country gets the brunt of international condemnation. And I have no idea why.....

2020-10-13 4:08:47 PM
OK, everyone knows my strong opinions. But now, I will be objective to try to shed some light on the complex situation.

In 1967, Jordan had the West Bank and Egypt had the Gaza Strip. They attacked Israel. Israel then fought back and took control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a defensive buffer. The war ended.

Israel had control of those two pieces of land. Israel offered to give them back in exchange for peace. Jordan and Egypt declined. So, Israel was left with control of those pieces of land. To this day, Israel is trying to figure out what to do with those pieces of land and the people who live there.

aleister_greynight: ColonelCathcart: Remind me, who pushed the Israelis off their land over the last 1300 years?

If they have been pushed around there by the people in charge for 1300 years, then it isn't their land is it?

Noted. How many years exactly does something have to be not somebody else's before we can claim it?

The United States of America stands with Israel.

Israel has a right to live in peace and security.

bostonguy: OK, everyone knows my strong opinions.

That's such a wonderful fantasy tale that Peter Jackson offered to direct. Israel started the war. Israel had plans to annex the land before the war even started. This has been admitted to by several members of the Israel government at the time. The IDF was clearing out Palestinian villages of all citizens before the fighting was even over.

But what it comes down to is that numerous lawful Palestinian landowners watched Israel take their land for something they had no part in. The government of Jordan declared war, not the farmers whose West Bank farms had been in his family for centuries. After the war, those farms were taken from the legal landowners by the State of Israel and the farmers are now forced to live in settlements. You think they should be happy about that situation? You think watching their property sitting across the fence they can't cross makes them support Israel. Did the US kick Japanese farmers off their land after WW2? Do you think that there wouldn't be a Japanese insurgency problem if they had?

I thought Jared had solved the Middle East. After all Trump got two or three Nobel Peace Prizes and he is giving one to Rush.

So during the last few days, the only commitments for Trump are white supremacists, Herschel Walker and the Farking Taliban... kind of explains the fully unhinged Tweeting the past week (plus the Dexamethasone)
