Biden: Hey, look, we screwed up.  We know it, you know it.  But we're working really hard to right this ship.  In the mean time, can you help send a quick message?  Just a carrier off Taiwan.
Trudeau: Fine, but only because we go way back.  And the way Melania looks at me pisses off Donny, and that makes me laugh.

They've even managed to piss off Canada.  Any other country would realize this means that they've gone too far.

Either that, or Western countries kind of wanted to send a message while making sure that China never, ever felt actually threatened

Taiwan's defence ministry said the Canadian corvette had sailed into the Taiwan Strait from the South China Sea and was heading in a northerly direction after leaving the waterway.

Was it a...

"Extremely dangerous move" lol. Yea, for you.

Stop farking with peoples' waterways, assholes. We're not paying you for it and we'll damn well sail there if we want to. Get used to it.

Or, you know, you can sink the world. Good luck with that.

China is in the midst of a periodic two minute's hate about the existence of Taiwan. I think these are actually planned just like in Orwell. They kinda go through periods of ignoring the issue and then acting like it's the biggest deal in the world.

Orwell wasn't some kind of oracle. He was writing a contemporary criticism of politics in day.

That it's also predictive is more a commentary on humanity

Countries like Canada and Australia with populations around ten percent of the US have to play a quieter foreign affairs game than world leaders like the US and China. Our economies rely on both the US and China. We're alligned with the US for military purposes etc but we can't not suck up to China at times too.

So both Australia and Canada engage in freedom of navigation exercises in the South China Sea, which pisses off China, then we get back to sucking up to them so they buy our exports such as iron ore, coal, wood pulp etc.

Whether it's the centre-left Trudeau in Canada or the centre-right Liberal Party which is in government in Australia it's exactly the same approach for exactly the same foreign policy reasons.

Trump being in the hospital should remind China that the US will not have a distracted, incompetent president forever. And successive presidents certainly will not be Putin's piglet.

2020-10-04 5:54:58 AM
Remember that China and Canada are already a little tense over the arrest of some Chinese national.
China has been trying to get pushy with Canada for a while, especially since Canada already lets a lot
of immigrants from China stay..This is just another way for Canada to thumb their nose at China
and let Xi know they won't be bullied..

China has gotten a little big in it's britches recently..They have made blatantly obvious assholish moves
like, like giving large sums of money or big projects to low rent countries in Africa..Then, when these places
won't let them turn the resource industries they want into slave/sweat shops, they make a margin
call for the money or the cost of the project they did, and threaten to destroy the credit of the country..
It's a dick move (not just in Bird Culture)..

Yes, we are an independent country. Which is why our government approving sales of high-tech firms to China and all the Chinese Government involvement in student groups attacking pro-Democracy Chinese nationals in Canada without the government saying "hang on a minute...." is somewhat worrying. And while most nations have given the Confucius Institute the boot, Canada is quite happy with it. It's just......weird.

Yea Trudeau really screwed us over by bending over and signing the CCPRPIA, locking Canada into it for a length of 31 years with no way to exit it. That allows China to do things like sue the government over any policy that harms their profits and the rulings can be kept secret if the suing party wants them to.

Oh wait that was Harper and his goons.

Like half of them closed fairly recently, didn't they? Yeah, I'd say they were monitoring them but there's some chicanery in canada. chiCanada.

My brehs in Vancouver who are actual professional adults, always tell me about some new bullshiat about money laundering, financial crimes, etc up there and how no one ever seems to get caught or punished even with a shiatload of evidence. Largely, these canucks think either financial crimes units/whatever are completely compromised, or no one actually wants to catch them, like it's just free money being invested in Canada rofl.

There was some pretty big case last year or something, that just ended with fark all, they're pissed about it to this day. Real America move there, Canada.

It's not as if we've had a president in decades who was interested in holding China accountable.  I bet they'd looking forward to Trump's exit just like we are, so they can get back to doing business predictably.

I'm okay with this. The USA is out. We need to accept it. The USA is no longer operational, and the best we can expect is for their armed forces to maintain status quo and refuse to turn against allies.

In the meantime, the rest of the G7 need to do what we can to keep the peace as best we can, and pray to high heaven that it is temporary.

Like, the USA docked a Pacific fleet. Their navy is still out there but they never recovered from Covid. Canada can't protect Taiwan by seizing Chinese assets. But Canada cannot be the long term solution.

The picture in TFA isn't of a Canadian warship. We're not running pocket carriers these days. I'm trying to figure out the actual name of the ship they think they're talking about.

/   Other than HMCS Sackville (a museum ship), Canada hasn't run corvettes since shortly after the end of WWII.
//   And if they somehow mean Sackville, then it wasn't an exercise in trolling China.

Seriously, the entire story is fishy.  As you mentioned, Canada hasn't fielded corvettes since around WW2.  Our last carrier was the Bonnie and she was scrapped around a half century ago (although a pair of pocket carriers would do the navy some good).  Our main ocean-going warships are frigates and subs.  We've got smaller coastal patrol vessels that are the size of a corvette but would never be on the other side of the Pacific.

Why does the article utterly fail to name the vessel while describing it as a class we don't have?

Not fishy, just incomplete. Turns out it was HMCS Winnipeg, one of the frigates. They posted about it from their twitter account.

And even if it is a Canadian frigate, it's probably simply in transit back to Canada from some international mission like the international force that combats piracy near Somalia.  An intentional provocation would be sailing near their new "reclaimed" island bases in the South China Sea.

That's exactly what they're doing. They're transiting to the US task force in the Sea of Japan that's contesting China's claim to certain islands.
