This is more interesting that TFA actually describes.

On the one hand, the union involved is quite a new union which formed to beat up the old traditional union which represented these workers, one of Australia's biggest unions the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees union (the SDA aka 'The Shoppies'). The shoppies are a big base for the right-wing faction of the Australian Labor Party which is for comparison purposes basically our Democrat Party. The shoppies have famously been quite friendly with employers and have actually had enterprise agreements thrown out because they left workers worse off than they were before. So this new RAFFWU has a lot riding on this case, because they have the potential to win a lot of new members from the old dodgy union. I don't know this for a fact but my guess is this entire dispute has arisen because the shoppies let employers get away with underpaying workers, and now years later it's gone to court.

Also, TFA makes no mention of the base pay rate of the workers involved. Although this is a minimum wage job, the minimum wage in question is far higher than the minimum wage across most of the US, and given TFA refers to 2014 I'd certainly say it was higher than any US state at that time.

Subby, I give you three didgeris one doo for that headline.  For a moment I thought I was dreaming Digit Dick and the Tasmanian Devil with some guy named Paterson playing the Banjo.
