The thing is, Adams is correct that the "fine people" thing is stripped of context. He's also right that the white supremacist question should have been a lay-up.

But he's blaming Trump for INCOMPETENCE, not for being a nazi. He's almost there but there are two big steps he needs to take before he can begin to heal his soul. First, he has to understand this isn't incompetence. Trump LIKES nazis and wants them to like him. Scott's proposed answers does harm to that mutual admiration. Second, he has to internalize the truth that Republicans can be nazis. That's a huge hurdle, because conservatives have this myth they love to tell themselves - no tyranny can be right-wing because tyranny is anathema to the ideology. This ignores that tyranny is anathema to the left just as much as it is the right. And it's an admission that conservatives desperately want to avoid - the idea that it's even a possibility puts constraints on their policy positions. It's so bad that the No True Scotsman overwhelmingly dominates their view of history. It's even worse than the, "It wasn't real communism," crowd's apologia.

Because Adams can't allow the notion that conservatism can slip into tyranny, he therefore cannot appreciate when it's actually happen, and he will continue to blame Trump's actions on incompetence rather than malevolence, and he will see this not as, "he must be stopped," and will not vote in a manner conducive to insuring we don't transition from the '20s to the '30s.

Meh, I can kinda understand. When I was young I was a big fan of Mike Tyson. I defended the hell out of him. Defended his sexual assault (forgive me, I was young and stupid). Defended his assaults. All of it.

Then he bit two chunks off a guys ear.

That was it, I gave in and conceded to my friends that they were right and I was wrong, he is a piece of crap.

It wasn't that the rest of it was OK and the biting was so heinous that I gave in, it was that cumulatively I couldn't hand wave it all away anymore.

This is probably like that, he isn't saying the rest of it is OK, just that all together it is so overwhelming that he can't deny it any longer.

Scott Adams is still a pile of garbage.

SurfaceTension: I thought he has more of a dude-bro/incel following.

He does.

His whole thing was that Trump was some kind of master persuader, which Adams himself -- being a genius and all -- realized long before the professional pundits did.  So when Trump somehow landed in the office, Adams got to ride a self-congratulatory high.

Now that Trump is doing well not to drool on himself in public, there's nothing about supporting him that 'looks smart,' so Adams is cutting his losses.

Scott adams man... What a shame he had some really funny writing ages ago. I was hoping he had finally circled back to reality with some sort of stomach dropping nauseating realization at seeing that deep down this was actually the same reality that we had been living in and that he was the one who has been wrong this whole time then he gets right back to:

"Could he win my vote back? Yeah all he has to do is denounce white supremacists"

fark off Scott, if you haven't figured out by now that the trump that openly courts white supremacists is the real deal trump and the press releases from the white house disavowing them have nothing to do with trump himself than you are an irredeemable sucker. OK, so clueless could be too dense they missed all that, but surely Charlotsville Trump certainly must have done it right? Nope, I guess Trump v2020 still didn't cause any to catch on either?

Is it that he now thinks Trump is a racist, or that he knows Trump is a racist but wanted him to not be so public about it. Maybe instead of a white hood, Trump could wear one that has a gold tassel in the back?

Don't forget the whole Birtherism thing, which is why Obama justifiably and classily joked about him at the 2011 WHCD, which bruised his poor widdle ego and is the whole reason he ran for President, just to get back at Obama and tear down his legacy, even if it means tearing down "Obamacare" (which was never even Obama's plan) in the middle of a pandemic and depression (no, this ain't just a recession), even if it means tearing down the nation.

It's been remarked on Fark before that Obama did that with such coolness even though that same day he was orchestrating the hit on Osama bin Laden which could easily have blown up in his face had it failed. Who would've thought then that of those two actions he did that day, the jokes at a dinner would be by far the more consequential?

Bullshiat.

The protest was organized by a white supremacists group.

The counter protesters were there to counter protest the white supremacist group.

Those were "both sides" If someone was there and they were siding with the white supremacist group they are, by definition, not a "very fine person".

He was asked about both C'ville and the larger debate over Confederate symbology. The "fine people" quote is most clearly in the context of the larger debate, not the two groups present in C'ville.

Which is why when he was directly asked about denouncing white supremacy groups two days ago, he dithered.

Was THAT out of context?

Try watching Lenny Henry as Gareth Blackstock in the BritCom "Chef!".  He had a command of invective that could strip the hide off a sous chef while never venturing into profanity.

Some examples:

(delivered like a Marine Drill Sergeant, just short of popping blood vessel):  "You are a pea-brained, prat-faced, pompous, pillock-headed cretin. If you took an intensive course of intelligence injections and studied till you drop, then one day you might make it to moron third class failed."

(delivered in a deceptively calm, polite, erudite tone - shifting to apoplectic Drill Sergeant for the last four words):  "While I was down there, I couldn't help noticing that the kitchen floor is in the most disgustingly filthy state that it is possible for the human brain to conceive. Amateur microbiologists amongst you will find much down there that will enthrall and fascinate. Very likely species as yet unknown to science are breeding freely underfoot even as I speak. It is possible that I'm kneeling all unbeknownst on a cure for the common cold, herpes and male pattern baldness all rolled into one. Put all such considerations out of your minds and clean this frigging floor!"

I remember enjoying the animated show, but I think it was more clever than funny most of the time.  Like, his dad never leaving the All-You-Can-Eat buffet, or him trying to "turn off" his Jeri Ryan alarm clock.

I probably got more laughs out of one episode of The Critic than the entire run of the animated Dilbert.

It's really bizzare, but apparently it is actually a real thing. Here's what I think it is:

They don't want to think they're racist. Trump is a flaming racist bag of shiat, but as long as there's some kind of "okay, sure, you tell yourself that sweetie" kind of excuse, they'll use that to pretend he's not *really* racist, 'cause...

However, when he openly endorsed a group of fascists founded by a neonazi when asked to condemn white supremacism, yeah it's pretty darn hard to invent an "uh b b but he didn't mean it *that* way..." excuse.

Others called it and it's becoming more and more clear that they were right: "Demented" "sleepy" Joe Biden saw him waffling and looking for an excuse to blather out some glittering generality that we can be sucked into debating if it was "actually" a lie, and on the spur of the moment offered Trump the rope and sure enough the "genius" with the "very large brain" and "world's best memory" fell for it like the farkwit he is and hanged himself.

There was a long time where, if someone said, "I was wrong about Trump," my response would have been hostile: "Where the hell were you last year when it might have done some good?"

Most of the time now, if someone says, "I was wrong about Trump" the sensible thing to say is, "Thank you for reconsidering. What made you change your mind?" When people leave cults, it's vital to give them a safe escape route. A lot of the reason people DON'T leave cults is because they're isolated by the hostility of those outside the cult.

Scott Adams? "I was wrong about Trump." Yeah, fark you.

I mean, he managed to make Trump's endemic racism about HIM. That's the only way he could let himself reconsider. Not by seeing the damage done to the country or to actual people or to international relations, but by seeing the damage done to HIM. Not one bit of compassion for the lives and livelihoods destroyed by Trump being Trump and doing what Trump does. HE was personally embarrassed.

Of course, Adams has fallen in deep with the idea that people are just bundles of reactions stuffed into meat suits. That's one of those ideas that's not wrong, but it really only goes so far. There's a lot of human ground that it doesn't cover, but he thinks it explains literally everything about everything. No wonder he's a Trumpfan. They were made for each other.

You want a good office-humor comic? Dilbert is just a Johnny-come-lately rip-off of the vastly superior in every respect (writing [humor, character development, story arcs, etc.], art, characters, etc.) On the Fastrack by Bill Holbrook. OtF predated Dilbert by ~½ decade. It also has in-universe connections with another Holbook strip (the man does three daily/Sunday strips: two syndicated, one webcomic [that just celebrated its silver anniversary a little less than a month ago]), Safe Havens (similar to the connection between Beetle Bailey and Hi & Lois).
