I thought it was hilarious.

Unfortunately, they don't mention the real hottie in that series.   I'm talking, of course, about Patience.

I think in general firefly fans have a pretty good sense of humor. If subby was trying to piss us off he will have to try a lot harder.

Now lets talk about how Firefly was the inspiration for Among Us. Jane is super sus

My problem with Serenity wasn't that TKW (and, y'know, that TKB), but that it felt too rushed; I understand why, of course - the opportunities and constraints of a film versus of a series -, but that didn't make it any less of a disappointment to me

I was just annoyed by the "oh yea, she is psychic" It seemed the show was building up to something more complex. Also they retconned how Simon got her out.

Serenity was OK, except they broke one of the rules from Firefly:  No faster than light communication.   That was a big disappointment.

I thought the 'Verse was a solar system with a large number of close, Earthlike planets and moons (like TRAPPIST-1), so FTL communication and drives wouldn't be needed.

Yes, but consider that it takes between 6 and 22 minutes just to send a signal from the Earth to Mars.  In any solar system you're going to have significant communications delays.

Communications nerd.

One of the things I liked about Firefly is that you couldn't just chat across the 'Verse.  For example, in the first episode, they send a "wave" to Patience on Whitefall.  That's a kin to an e-mail.  They couldn't actually have a real-time video chat with her until they were in orbit around Whitefall.

That adds a great degree of realism.

Then, in Serenity, you've got 'Verse-wide video chats.  Disappointing.

I'm about 9 episodes into a rewatch, and I was curious about the 'Verse so I looked up the wiki. They're going off of a map made for a board game or something, so it's not entirely canon (nor neccessarily contradicted either).

The 'Verse is a series of solar systems based around five stars (with one standard yellow and a red dwarf that are both in orbit of a larger white one) that are all real close together. You have the Blue Star called "Blue Sun" and another Yellow star on the outskirts of the trinary star system. Plus a number of brown dwarfs that have be helioformed to ignite into small stars with their own planets.

Of course, the movie says it's "a new solar system" implying a singular one with a ton of planets and moons. Either way.

I was fine with River being a psychic, they'd hinted at that during the series.  Her talk with Badger in "Shindig," for example.  My main complaint about "Serenity" was they needed to flesh out the villain's motivation better.  Okay, he wants to create a world without sin.  What does he mean by that?  Why does he think the Alliance and the terrible things he does for them will bring about his world without sin?  I don't want his complete manifesto, but the broad strokes would have been nice.  His change of heart after seeing the footage from Miranda rang hollow to me because they hadn't established a character reason why it would.  Dude admitted to doing a lot of awful things in pursuit of his goal and that he'd never see Paradise, why would some mind control gas bother him?

Communications delays used to be a part of human existence, right up until the invention of the telegraph.   We've had 176 years now of expecting to be able to communicate instantly, or near instantly, with an ever growing part of the planet.

It's something that we've internalized.

It's infected out science fiction.  Sometimes we've invented ways around it.  Subspace radio.  Ansibles.  Tachyons.  That kind of thing.

But the reality is that we're never going to be able to communicated faster than light.  No, not even using quantum entanglement.

So we should have stories that exploit that.   Most of our history we had communications delays.  For example, the Battle of New Orleans was fought after the peace treaty ending the War of 1812 was signed.   If the telegraph was around back then, especially a transatlantic telegraph, that battle would have never been fought.

So why not write stories that have that communications delay built in?  That's one of the things I really liked about Firefly:  No faster than light travel (though relatively fast), and no faster than light communications.

Then they blew it in Serenity.
