That's not unfortunate, that's stupid. I wouldn't put a $20 winning lottery ticket in the mail.

My company's PO Box rental was coming up to renew today.  Three weeks ago, I wrote them a check and since it was after hours, I dropped the payment in a mailbox just outside the post office, using the prepaid, pre-stamped envelope that they gave me.

3 weeks later, they've never received it.  It literally had to travel 20 feet, and they lost it!

I don't know how things work in Florida, but in Oregon, you can claim prizes up to $600 at your local retailer, and over $50k at the lottery office. Everything in between has to be claimed by mail.

And this is why you should know the difference between certified mail and registered mail.

Certified mail is just a glorified signature confirmation. Registered mail is the one that guarantees it will farking get there because it stays in locked containers with a documented chain of custody where the last person responsible for that container is actually going to get fired if it goes missing.

Right?
Who doesn't self-deliver present an actual winning big ticket?
If you legitimately believe you've won millions you find a way to float the trip to claim it

I mean, if I ever won more than $20 or so even if the postal service wasn't under attack by the American Taliban, I'd just drive right to the lotto office to cash out anyway.

If you had RTFA, you would realize the prize for this particular ticket was $1k. I mean I'm not turning down a cool g, but it's not like this was a power ball payout.

It's still ridiculous that it was lost.

Here in The Sacred Realm*, there's another tamper-evident area on lotto tickets where you fill in your name and details in ink, and now it's legally yours, in case it's worth something, and nobody else can claim that the ticket it theirs.

However, if I ever won big, I'd be so nervous that I'd sign it...

To claim in person would cost me about 90$ 160? 80 miles, each way.
And that's in Texas. So every one else in the US has no excuse to float a drive .

It's not like people haven't been making jokes about the incompetence of the US mail for as long as I've been alive. And I'm an old Farker.  They lose millions of ballets every election year.  I can only see three reasons for pushing for mass mail-in ballets.  1. They want an excuse for throwing a tantrum when they lose. 2. They want to flood the system with bogus ballots hoping enough get accepted anyway. 3. They're stupid.

Weng: Registered mail is the one that guarantees it will farking get there

Not even that is guaranteed.

The jeweler in my home city also does clock repairs on my mother's long-case clock. I chatted with him a few years ago about shipping expensive stuff because he does all kinds of custom jewelry work but also sends pieces out for custom work from other jewelers that specialize in some stuff he doesn't do in his shop. He has horror stories about USPS "losing" registered mail stuff insured for big dollars. The last straw for him was a custom wedding set insured for $38,000 that never arrived. Postal Inspectors came to his shop, took the claim, investigated, and returned to hand him a $38,000 check. I mentioned that they paid up on the insurance claim to replace the jewelry and he said sure, but the worse part was having to go tell the person who commissioned the wedding set that the diamonds inherited from someone like 5 generations prior are now missing forever. I asked him if he still uses USPS and his answer was basically spitting out his coffee to say NEVER AGAIN, only FedEx or UPS, 2nd day air services. Never a package lost with those two services.

This story is silly. $1K worth of insurance would only cost $15.15 when mailing it. In fact, better odds than the lottery! Mail yourself an empty envelope, insured for $500 (Costs $7.10 plus postage), cash in when it gets lost.
Don't actually do that though, it's probably considered mail fraud.

Budget cuts was poorly worded because it wasn't specific. but Republicans mandated that within ten years the United States Postal Service would have to fully fund retirement healthcare benefits for the next 75 years. Or to put it more plainly, the Postal Service had a decade to fully fund the retirement healthcare benefits for future employees that will not even be born until 2057 at the earliest.

If you now anything about the GOP, that wasn't about the goodness of their hearts. The republicans have been trying to destroy the USPS for a long time. And no, it's not something Obama could have fixed.

Mugato: within ten years the United States Postal Service would have to fully fund retirement healthcare benefits for the next 75 years

On its face I don't have a problem with this. The 10-year period for funding was a little ridiculous, though.

In the private sector we have requirements that companies offering pensions and retirement benefits have them adequately funded. Companies have to manage those pension funds to keep them within actuarial guidelines, and have to top them off with cash if they are falling short of investment goals. Fail to do this and in a real world with robust union representation we would have workers going on strike to force companies to adequately fund their pensions and retirement benefits.

I see no reason that a quasi-government agency shouldn't be held to the same standard. It's almost criminal that governments (my state is awful at this) get away with chronic underfunding of pensions to where it's going to bankrupt our state. They ought to be required to maintain a pension fund for retirement benefits just like lots of other companies are required to do.

Nope. The inability and unwillingness of USPS to adapt to market conditions is farking them up. Cut residential and business delivery to 3-5 days a week (excepting priority mail paid extra) and raise postage prices (perhaps price delivery by zones like FedEx and UPS do?) and they can be well funded.
