We're seeing the endgame winning strategies from both parties.

Biden: Paint himself as the sane candidate to vote for in November.
Trump: Steal the election and hope to burn the country down to stay in power because the alternative is prison.

What I really noticed was how Biden looked into the camera to address the people.  Trump rarely did so.

And he *almost* had a perfect moment when he went into Dad mode when talking about his son. Trump rammed that moment much like he rams everything else.

I don't think he's really worried about prison. I think either way (reelected or not) he'll die before he sees the inside of a cell. I think his ego and his need for attention will never have a platform this big.

Assuming he loses and doesn't have to be dragged out of the White House, the rest of his life is gonna be like the debate: He will *never* shut-up about how great his Administration was, and how terrible the Biden / Harris Administration is.

What is delicious is that he believes his own Bullshiat so he will spend the rest of his life trying to justify himself and whining about how he was railroaded and how unjust it all is.

It will burn inside him. He will be resentful and in pain for the rest of his life.

Trump isn't quite as bad as a comment section... But he's very, very, very approachable to the kind of people that leave comments on Facebook and YouTube.

This is the thing that a lot of people haven't picked up on.  Even if he loses, he's not going to go away. He will still be on Twitter, and his followers will still be his followers. He will lose the ability to use the US government to do what he wants, but he will still have people willing to believe what he tweets, just because he tweeted it.

If we are incredibly lucky, he will be charged, tried, and found guilty of enough crimes that we can effectively give him the Jules-Pierre Mao (from the Expanse books) treatment: lock him and his cronies into a deep dark hole to live out the rest of their days with their only link to the outside world being a TV showing only news of the dismantling of his entire legacy, while whatever assets and "wealth" he might have is redistributed to aid marginalized communities, and while watching the name Trump, if it is to be remembered at all, become synonymous with "biggest loser who ever lost bigly". Let them watch impotently as everything they sought to gain at the expense of the rest of the world is dismantled and destroyed.

That might be something resembling justice.

Trump's debt is a major factor, and I think the risk of losing everything he has AND risk of prison are factors. You are right for the second paragraph, though.

He has no imagination.  The only way to get him to look at camera would be to film him with a mirrored lens.

Then again, the rest of us gazing upon Trump's worship of himself would probably open up some kind of Lovecraftian hellhole.

In reality, no, he won't do a day in a real prison.

If he is even tried and found guilty of anything---both very big ifs---I fully expect, and recommend, that he will be allowed to serve any sentence under house arrest at Mar-a-Lago, under the Secret Service protection that is his right as a former president.

What isn't clear at all is whether Trump understands this or believes his own base's bullshiat about the (((Deep State))) routinely murdering people to shut them up before they can get their day in court and expose the conspiracy.

The way Trump may understand it, the first act of the Biden/Harris administration will be to execute him---to the applause, no doubt, of the Manhattan (((globalists))) who always envied his star power, never gave him a break and never forgave him for humiliating them in 2016.

Because a top priority of the Deep State is settling feuds between New York real estate developers.

I've been saying this: the U.S. is going to stink of Donnie's kentucky fried farts till he dies, and for some time thereafter. Because no matter how or when he goes, the Q people and the rest of the Trump-worshipping chucklefarks will blame it on a deep state conspiracy. This is getting tiresome.

So ... Facebook. Thanks for the explainer, Slate.

I mean, I guess kudos for recognizing reality is what's happening today. (shrug)

Personally, I think recognizing reality should be the default. You don't get credit for it, it should be just what you do, automatically, as an adult.

Trump's debt is the reason all these fears that he hangs around forever riling to morons are unfounded.

When he's not president, I bet he's a dead man. I think his secret service agents walk off the job one day for a few seconds and that's that.

Which actually might be a detriment to the GOP. Now they have a rapid base of supporters that they need, but who are under the power of Donnie boy.

I in no way think he's a king maker but he thinks he is and he would get involved in primaries/elections. If the GOP wants to get the full base or more money they need him. Sure he could swing some deep red states. But nationwide he would just suck the power from GOP.

This is all of course assuming Election Day we do see some semblance of sanity and the nation as a whole rejects Trump and his ideals.

I also think it would be kind of a personal hell for not necessarily Trump but the rest of his family to only be adored by people they despise.

The president has no ability or interest in doing the work to build a majority. Unfortunately, somehow this little shard of reality has managed to penetrate into the little world the president lives in. He's been working on building an army in its stead.

Why would he ever piss on the Proud Boy's parade? The typical suburban swing voter isn't going to road trip to urban areas to menace voters at voting precincts or storm state government buildings to halt tabulation of ballots after the president declare victory on election night.

He needs those people because up until election night the president and his allies won't be looking for voters or vote totals, he'll be looking for excuses. And if he can't find one, he can easily manufacture one. In the best scenario it'll just amount to something him and his supporters can impotently whine about for the rest of their lives. The other cases involve using that excuse to unleash his army comprised of GOP lawyers and lawmakers, DOJ irregulars, and groups like the Proud Boys to take to the courtroom, statehouses, and streets to inhibit the transition of power if not stop it entirely.

He'll literally be a loser at that point. A lot of his followers will stop caring at that point.  Not all of course.  But many.  Because they are weak and dumb and  have short attention spans that will focus on the next dog-whistling, shiat-stirring, grifting yahoo the right spews from its tainted bathers.

Good, then one of two things will happen.

1. The GOP will continue to be in thrall to him and he will run in 2024 or one or more of his kids will and the GOP appeals to a smaller and smaller percentage of the electorate.

2. He blames the GOP establishment and runs them down, effectively splitting the party.

It's a win-win.
