Meanwhile, the school board of the biggest city in my state is about to change its COVID rules so that asymptomatic students and staff don't quarantine and just keep going to school.

So the rich are okay and only the poors are farked? Yeah, the temporarily embarrassed millionaires that comprise at least 43% of Americans are fine with that.

43.8% approve of Trump. And they vote.

You are looking at four more years of this unless you get everyone you know to the polls. Vote early. Don't wait for election day.

To be fair, Herbert Hoover got 40% of the vote against FDR too. It seems to be the floor of support no matter how big the blowout turns out to be.

Case in point, Mondale got 40% in 1984

I agree nothing should be taken for granted and everyone needs to vote as early and safely as possible.

Anyone who imagines voter fraud has never voted, or else just wants to stop legitimate voters exercising their constitutional right.

I keep trying to bet people. We'll each put up stories of actual voter fraud that identifies D or R as the beneficiary. I'll do R ones. The person who runs out of news stories first loses. Wouldn't you believe it, nobody wants to take me up on that. Weird. But hey, at least they got those six Trump votes that got thrown in the trash, because the dumb-dumbs submitting them couldn't be bothered to follow the needless complex rules...that Republicans put in place. The really sad part is that the vast majority of people afraid of voter fraud are not disingenuous, they are sincere. Fear is the driving force of the whole GOP voter base, and the fear doesn't have to be rational. Fear is easy to instigate and manipulate, and the GOP knows this. I see so many posts on social media: "the choice isn't Trump vs Biden, it's between freedom and socialism!" And half of Americans actually sincerely think that. Because fear.

And of course willful ignorance.

I'm sure Putin will be voted out of office any day now.

Everyone should vote because it's their civic duty, but it's naive to think that Trump won't become president-for-life regardless of the outcome of the popular vote.

A country that elects someone like Trump--for the reasons that Trump was elected--once is already too far gone to save. When 40% of a population elects a leader specifically because they are running on a platform to persecute the majority, it's a very hard struggle just to stop the end result from being another Rwanda. Preserving democracy isn't even on the table anymore.

When you're at the top of the lift hill on a roller coaster, it's too late to back out.

Though its overall total of cases is huge, the per capita number of cases reported daily in India - and in many other low-income countries, including in Africa - is lower than in Spain, France or even the United States. And its number of deaths has not yet topped 100,000 - which has surprised some scientists.

"Over all, the researchers found, 71 percent of the people in the study did not seem to have transmitted the virus to anyone else; instead, just 5 percent of people accounted for 80 percent of the infections detected by contact tracing.

This is different from the idea of "super spreader" events in which a single person infected hundreds of people at a crowded gathering, Dr. Lewnard said."

What the fark?

Oh well, it's not like this virus ultimately leaves a substantial number of victims with lasting health or cognitive problems, or leaves 2/3 of them with heart damage. There's a lot we don't know, but one thing that's *absolutely* clear is that this disease is NOT of the "you get it, then you get better again" type.

Covid will have been exterminated long before we *know*, but based on the damage it does to the circulatory system and the heart, there's a substantial probability that it may steal decades of life from its victims' futures.

Even better, I'm one of those folks with a job too crappy to pay me not to do. So I go to work every day at an office with all the cubicle jockeys working from home. I clock in and go to sleep, then go home with all my time paid for after doing nothing.

I might quit whenever the pandemic is over and they start expecting work out of me again.

A lot of people don't know that the virus is disproportionally affecting poorer neighborhoods and POC. In India, and everywhere else. Younger folks especially. I made a point of making sure my (grown) kids knew. I'm also telling other people, whenever the subject comes up.

School openings should be based on positive cases per capita by zip code, not by districts. School districts in my large city span rich and poor neighborhoods. People in poorer neighborhoods are more likely to have multi-generational households. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc living with kids going to school. They're also more likely to have more people per household. They're also the people who are working at Walmart, the supermarket and the gas station. They're also more likely to be POC. We know these things. Let's hope those things are considered when schools reopen. The ones that aren't opened already anyway.

Kids spreading a germ that kills the olds could  be a real Darwinian moment if we snuff most of the aging global population and free up lots of resources and slow pollution.

Not as humane as condoms, pills, and elective pregnancy termination, but nature um funds a way.

I'm starting to think that it's straight-up lack of intelligence. Intelligence can be defined as the ability to adapt to new circumstances, and some of these leaders are so bad at adapting to this new reality that they can only try to impose the previous reality, as if that could possibly work.
