This is unfortunately not the only case of this.  One question I always have but never seems to get answered is are the mother's breastfeeding at all?  Do their cult-like obedience to veganism preclude them from giving their child mother's milk from birth?  Or, do the mothers ween the child at a normal age and that is when the malnutrition starts?  Or, are the mothers unable to produce enough breastmilk due to their own nutritional deficiencies?

It's scary how many parents think that even toddlers should be on a low fat diet.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Are we giving them weapons? Judging from the babies diet they probably aren't capable of a fist fight

A tragity such as this is deserving of mercy killings. Execute both parents to ensure this never happens again. Because no one who is that reckless with a human life, especially that of their own child, should be allowed to harm another soul.

Strict veganism is supposed to be about consent and exploiting other living beings for our benefit (see: honey debate).
In theory, if there are egg-producing hens in your yard and they'll waste the eggs, you're not profiting off of them and you could eat them (insert: people with wildly misinformed ideas about what eggs are. Hint: It's not chicks).

Further, breast milk from a willing human should be 100% vegan if they consented to it. By extension, any dairy product made from consensual human milk would be vegan (formula, cheese, Greek yogurt... please, don't gag. It's natural!)

Anyway, given the prevalence of pet/cat malnutrition stories, idealized nature gets in the way of actual nature.

Well said, and while I dislike PETA, I do agree with them on their stance regarding vegans and breastfeeding.

"Like all mammals, a human mother produces milk for the sole purpose of nourishing her baby. So for vegan moms and their babies, there's no moral contradiction in breastfeeding."

At the same time, if a vegan mother doesn't breastfeed for whatever reason there are vegan formulas available, so there's no excuse not to give your baby proper nutrition.

The meat eaters who starve their children do it because they are bad parents.  The vegans who starve their children do it in the name of their religion.

Had a new guy start at work.  Lunchtime came and he asked about nearby places and I told him "the office cafeteria usually sucks but today they have a chicken curry that's surprisingly delicious for them."

"Unfortunately, I'm vegan."

Oh.  "Unfortunately my food shiats on your food."  Everyone laughed, just pickin on him a little, and where I work that's just how we play.

Next thing you know he doesn't come back from lunch.  Doesn't answer his phone when we call.  We started getting worried he got in an accident or something.

Nope.  He left "for lunch" and it turned out on his way past the security desk he dropped off his shiny new keycard.  Never returned any calls and his emergency contact never answered.  HR got so concerned they got the local Sheriff's office to perform a wellness check.  He was fine.

We have no idea if it was my joke or something else that caused him to leave.  We decided if it was the joke then he wouldn't have lasted very long anyhow.

/My guess is still that he had a different and better job that came through that day
//But to not even respond to HR calling?  He doesn't have to worry about ever working here now....

I think this plan has legs.

Make everybody sterile until the point where firstly they choose to have a child, that would stop a lot of unwanted pregnancy. Then as a second hurdle before becoming fertile, they have to attend a basic parenting class and pass a rudimentary exam. You know, simple stuff like how to change a nappy, what to feed your kid etc.

Then, the only people capable of having a kid are people who want one and are able to change a nappy and feed their kid properly.

Of course, now someone who does not think they are in any way radical and extremist will say that doing so will lead to eugenics, genocide, and the total destruction of humanity...

The use of 'unfortunately' here speaks volumns. Veganism is an affliction not a choice?

I have two young daughters so this story made me uncomfortable. They must have seen their child was suffering, doing nothing about it is unfathomable for me. The 'you had one job' gets overused but being a parent really does boil down to one job - do whatever it takes to get your child safely to adulthood.

As far as meat eating people go, there is another way- if people are bitten by a certain kind of tick they become allergic to red meat!

Sorry to butt in to the standard fark anti-vegan triangle-fap, but these two were afflicted with way more than veganism - they were SO afraid of any 'westernised' authority figures. Mostly 'The Government' but any 'Establishment', such as western medicine, too. Yup, they were antivaxxers who bought into the 'If it's all-natural, then you're good!' mindset, which actually believes that, yes, arsenic is all natural, and therefore can be used in small amounts to treat a 'natural imbalance' in the patient.

They're the type of mind who will 'treat' their melanoma with Black Salve,(not safe for lunch) instead of getting surgery/chemo.

These aren't your regular, annoying, obnoxious, pious, crossfitting, blowhard vegans. No. Those guys are positively sane in comparison. These two were f*cking batsh*t crazy.

It's worrying that the mother got custody, more worrying that they bred a second time, but heartwarming to know that they're not together anymore, and the father has renounced his UberVegan lifestyle.

/I'm truly gutted for the kid who now has CP because their mother is a complete Honkbag of a human.

It's two years down the line. It sounds as if they genuinely but stupidly thought they were doing the right thing, and there was no intentional infliction of suffering or distress. So if the mother genuinely accepts that they were wrong, is looking after the kid properly and following all medical advice, it's fine to let her have responsibility again.

I'm usually pretty tolerant to differing world views, and veganism/vegetarianism is laudable for whatever moral reasons you do it, but the amount of vegans that tout veganism as the natural state for humanity annoys the hell out of me. Half-truths and pseudoscience try to explain away why they need supplemented food, or why our bodies are shaped like a predator's.

I get it, do your thing, but don't lie to people to get them to do the same thing. I've had something akin to b12 deficiency. Not being able to walk right was a goddamn nightmare.

All the ethical and moral arguments aside, humans sadly are simplybnot evolved to be vegans.  At some point, especially with children, you have to mske a compromise and allow some protein source.

Some people get around this by eating bugs or fish.  Others by only eating animals that were humanely raised and put down.

I on the other hand only eat invassive species that do not belong in our natural world.  Living in the states these include, cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys that have been so genetically modified that they have no place in the natural world.

My husband is vegetarian, I eat meat occasionally but fark me this kind of thing just ruins it for anyone who is trying to eat a bit more ethically.  Being vegan is fine (although not my cup of tea) if you are careful to balance vegetables to get your complete proteins etc. Definately not a replacement for formula.  Just see about the history of baby nutrition before formula became available.  Pretty farking dire if for whatever reason you couldnt breastfeed or find a wet-nurse.  And for that matter, why wouldnt they just breastfeed for one thing?. and, if that didnt work maybe listen to science and doctors rather than internet nutrition experts and "natural" remedy quacks. they were asking message boards what do to do because their baby was floppy?  fark those farking clowns

All plant food contains proteins. Some, like soya, have a balance of amino acids comparable to meat. Unless you're doing it really wrong, lack of protein isn't a problem for vegans.

Wait. as the Head Male of my family, I was clearly told (by custom, tradition, religion, and the web of laws surrounding families) that my children are my property, to do with, mold, or even discard as I see fit. My wife, of course, is a special instance of this, as sex with her is legal.
