It's a bit farther than I'm willing to go for anything sort of necessary murder - y'know at short notice and all.  Getting older, sigh...

It's a long drive considering that in retrospect, he'll have wasted his time driving all that way to punch a guy, get arrested, get done with the legal system (which is no joke in Japan) and eventually drive back. All that, for some girl who apparently doesn't give a shiat about him.

That's the one.  Ted Grant was the guy shot with the boxing glove... ran a gym, was accused of murder.  Trained Laurel Lance to fight.  Later revealed that he used to be a vigilante himself, one with brass knuckles.

No, Ted Grant was the newscaster on the Mary Tyler Moore show. He was a hilarious character.

It is about an hour round trip (cause you don't get highway speeds the entire way). While an hour's drive isn't that bad, it is subjectively longer at 1 AM after a day's activity than at 8 AM after a night's sleep.

Unless you're a night owl. I'd fare much better at 1 am than 8 am.

Also there'd be less traffic at 1 am.

Woke you from your sleep
To throat-punch you
Get up and fight
I drove all night

I remember being stunned when I saw the actual distances between Camp Fuji and other bases or between Camp Fuji and Tokyo. The roads wind through mountainous terrain and there are innumerable tolls along the way. It always took us twice as long as it would in the US to cover the same distance.

When you live on an island, your perception of such things is different. Someone here may groan about having to drive "all the way" to the west side, but I had to drive farther than that just to get to high school on the mainland.

When it's a mountainous island. There are no straight roads. And turning lanes are few and far between. Something that I would considered a quick trip on US roads can be a farking slog over here. And the speed limit is like 35 mph on roads and 60 on the tollways.

Yea, but....what's the speed camera situation like?

Being Japan I assume insane, with lasers to blast your tires if it's really egregious, but I honestly have no idea.

What I do know is that twisty mountain roads are much more fun at speeds higher than the signs suggest.

Harlan Ellison had a story about flying from LA to NYC just to find a guy at a party and punch him in the face after the other guy had insulted the memory of the recently-deceased Rod Serling. He then immediately flew back.

'Course, I can't find it now.
