Good. I spend a lot of time up in that area and it's proper wilderness. Other than the clearcuts. And the old gold mines. Lots of great lakes, though. Excellent fishing, usually.

Nova Scotia can't afford to poison a few legs, there's about 10 million of them in the province.

It's pretty much impossible to outfish smallmouth, I mean read everything they tried, from net trawling a 10' deep lake to electrofishing to dropping the lake level before winter to kill their oxygen supply. You can catch smallmouth almost anywhere in north America, they're trying to preserve some of the last Atlantic Salmon habitat.

That's a tiny lake, but if it feeds into a river system with salmon, do it right now.

This may be a first for Nova Scotia, but it's not a new thing. Cal has used the same chemical to get rid of northern pike. Took two tries on one lake. Turns out the toothy bastards are hard to kill.

Send me up there.  I'll be glad to catch them all.  Gotta break in my new Abu Garcia reel anyhow

This plan was met with a chorus of disapproval by the larger (mouth) bass community.  These talking fish heads once in a lifetime prefer you let their small mouth cousins keep stayin' alive.

This is an archetype of why we will kill ourselves as a species.

I've never seen anybody eat a small mouth bass. They always get released.
When I was a kid my dad told me we didn't eat them because they had to many bones.

Good to see Canadian conservation is as farked up as American conservation.

Yes species W existed in this river 100 years ago. But species X has moved in and is superior. So let's poison entire rivers to remove species X and grow species W in a lab and dump them in the river via plane... where they'll just be outcompeted by species X next year.

Leave it the fark alone. You can't out bio-engineer natural selection. It is what it is now. They're just blowing money for zero gain.

Not exactly.
The fish were introduced to that lake illegally and it feeds into a major Salmon River.
They aren't using the toxicant on the river, they're using it on the little lake to prevent egress to the river system.

Salmon aren't in the river year round, and wild salmon populations have shown to be in trouble the world over. They are incredibly important to their native ecosystems.

It's like the old song goes:

I live out here at the edge of the world
Rocks and trees but barely a girl,
So all winter long I wait for the river,
Get out there y'all and I'mma giver
Reach that bank and what do I find?
Ain't a goddamn fish to grab my line.

I say,
Where the salmon, where the salmon, where the salmon, LUH?
Where the salmon, where the salmon, where the salmon, LUH?
Where they to, y'all?
Where they to, y'all?
Where? Where? Where did they go?
Cuz there ain't no fish no more.

If you were to deal with them in a lake of that size you have to consider the depth of the lake. And that begs the question, how low can you go?

That's not a bass...

2020-09-29 9:11:37 AM
Out in a boat a couple of times we've found some not-so-large mo mouthed bass; the fish had tried to swallow another one and it got lodged in the mouth, tail of the swallowee sticking out the mouth, spines in its fins acting like barbs.

Once was a freak occurrence, thrice seems to be a stupid fish problem.  Though I bet the birds enjoyed the fish equivalent of turducken.

This has ZERO to do with natural selection, this is about overfishing of Atlantic Salmon and illegal stocking of a pristine lake by some idiot using an invasive species. This is all about problems created by people and trying to preserve the natural habitat of a species that we have royally screwed over. I mean would you think that habitat preservation and the removal of domestic cows in order to preserve the last Buffalo herd in North America would be stupid despite the fact that the overhunting of buffalo and the introduction of cows were both caused by humans?

We used to catch smallies at my dad's lake and eat them. He was pretty adept at filleting them so bones were never a problem. Used to catch perch and pickerel and the odd large mouth too.

And...

The pesticide - LeBlanc refers to it as a toxicant - is taken up through the gills and targets fish.
"So for the most part, other organisms are unaffected."

I know some you are saying it's only low dose and won't kill the bigger fish. But it will still effect them.
