Melania, maybe? That one year of tax returns they got back in 2016 From way back was from Marla maples because they filed jointly and it was her tax returns too.

It's something his lawyer or accountant would have.

One thing I find curious about this:  If the Times is refusing to reveal the documents to protect the source, why or how does that work? Is there a version of the returns for each person who holds a copy of it? If so can't that just be edited out?

Getting into politics was the worst thing Trump could've done. He could've lived and died, having everybody think that he was a good business man because he was on the apprentice and appeared in Home Alone 2... But then he had to go and get into politics, and then have all of his shiatty dealings go down in a history book.

Been thinking about the "who".  Mary Trump is an obvious choice, but why would SHE have access to his 2017-2018 returns? Especially his business ones?

Then it hit me:  There IS someone who would have access to everything, and a motive to damage Trump.   Which is to say his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.   Now, if he were the source it would be a shocking and unforgivable breach of an attorney's duty to his client; but Cohen is already disbarred and permanently DQ'ed by virtue of his felony conviction, so, he literally has nothing left to lose

I swear to God the Dems are soooo shiat at attacking Trump.

The fact that he DOESN'T PAY TAXES is a bonus to him and to his supporters.  He uses the system to avoid paying them (tax avoidance rather than tax evasion).

He'll be PROUD he payed so little and he'll shout to his supporters that's because he's SO SMRT and he uses the system.

"The corrupt system that the evil Dems set up, where you get hosed and all the rich people get to take advantage of", he'll shout, and they'll applaud.

Of course, BOTH parties set up this system but that's hardly important to either him or his supporters.

Each number / piece of information is probably present in a few different documents.

Each person / entity with access to documents has access to different collections of them.

It's plausible that someone could, if given original documents, narrow down which accountants spilled the beans and they could face repercussions.  That's harder if they don't know which docs are involved.

I get where you're coming from, but this tax return thing? It's a biggie.

Of course, we still have to win this election, but Trump is in a lot of trouble after he's thrown out of the White House. For starters, I think it's clear Melania will divorce his ass and he reportedly won't even have enough to pay for the prenup.

2020-09-28 4:41:20 PM
This article seems to be saying that it must have been somebody close to Trump who leaked to the Times, somebody close enough to have all his tax records.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but, could it not have also been a source in the IRS itself? Somebody with no connection to Trump, but with access to all his tax data? I'm not saying that's more likely, or even that it's plausible, but is it possible?

Yep and there's still a decent chance he wins reelection. Then, there's an even better chance he "wins" reelection.

In a sane and moral country, he would've been imprisoned decades ago for tax and/bank fraud along with a sexual assault or two and this whole nightmare could have been avoided.

As said above, won't matter unless a lot of Rapepublicans get thrown in jail too, or else their only take away lesson will be to find a slightly smarter fascist.

I am forever frustrated that Democrat's leadership have yet to learn that "taking the high road" and being polite doesn't resonate with voters, and that the only entity that talks to Trump the way Republicans talk to everybody else, are a bunch of neo-con grifters over at the Lincoln project.

2020-09-28 4:44:13 PM
I don't think Trump is anywhere disciplined enough to execute a conventional canary-trap gambit. His lawyers or accountants might be, but given that the leaker is probably in the inner circle, those are exactly the people he should be suspecting, which means he'd have to do it himself. Which he won't.

So I'd just advise Trump to avoid sleeping, so that he can always be watching. Watching for anyone who might be trying to screw him over. And maybe eat an extra bucket of extra-crispy to keep up his energy. And add extra salt, you want to make sure you have enough electrolytes when you're going for days without sleeping.

Not likely.   When he became President, all of his records were removed from the regular database and locked up tight.  Not just anybody can get to them so random IRS employee would never have access to them.

OK, stupid question and it's probably been answered someplace: has anyone actually seen the tax returns or are we just relying on what the NYT says? I'd really like some outside validation to corroborate what they are printing. I watched the news last night and ABC said they had not validated what the NYT said. NYT said that they won't reveal their source (understandable) but that they won't show the returns because it might reveal their source and how the returns were obtained.

By this same kind of logic someone can claim that I have been sleeping with Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie and Jennifer Lawrence and they all say that not only am I a skilled lover with an enormous penis but that I have, in fact, provided them with the best sex they ever had. But they can't provide you with the proof of my sexual exploits because then you'll know how they obtained their evidence.

It depends on what documents were deposed in lawsuits.

There could be quite a number of people who had the documents, as part of a suit, and weren't supposed to release them to anyone else (as they weren't theirs to release), including the niece, sister, ex-wives, maybe even several of his creditors.

Trump has pissed off a lot of people who have access to those records.

About the only place we can be relatively certain isn't the ones who released them is someone from the IRS.

Trump not paying taxes is part of what this showed.

What it showed that likely does irk his supporters... is that he's a bum. He's living on other people's money, making investments that never succeed, living like a success by marking everything as a business expense.

He is King of Failure Mountain, and we have the tax returns to prove it now. He's being audited by the IRS, looked into multiple counts of tax fraud by the NY AG, and has hundreds of millions in loans that have to be paid off within the next handful of years.

Trump is a conman, but his only con was to the IRS, and that only worked by failing so hard that he had no profits to claim. He's been losing tens of millions for the past decade, jot even his gold courses are profitable.

He's a failure who is just savvy enough to look good doing it... but his failures are on paper now and impossible to ignore.

I doubt it, Trump's taxes at the IRS are going to be in something akin to a Mission Impossible type vault with an extra helping of laser beams and any employee that even looks in it's direction will get questions from their superiors over it.

Anyone accessing it would leave a trail that'd be sure to get them fired and in legal trouble.

BlackPete: One thing I find curious about this:  If the Times is refusing to reveal the documents to protect the source, why or how does that work? Is there a version of the returns for each person who holds a copy of it? If so can't that just be edited out?

Not a different version, but depending on what exact documents they have, it can narrow down the source a lot.

So, as we know, Trump has been sued a lot.

Like, a lot a lot.

Some of those suits could have gotten tax records as part of the discovery process.  And because no two suits are the same, those that got tax records in discovery likely got different periods of tax records.

E.g.,

Suit #43 got years 2000-2012.

Suit #219 got years 2002-2012.

Suit #314 got years 1999-2017.

etc.

So by not revealing which documents they actually have (and maybe tailoring the article to talk about less than you actually have), they can protect which of the many hundreds of lawsuits these documents may have come from.

It means the person who leaked those returns is the only one who would have those copies.

Meaning it's the accounting firm, or someone in the IRS or the SDNY, and someone who really shouldn't have been leaking confidential documents.
