Personally I hail Shostakovich as a genius.  He's one of very few Russians that has written things that are only somewhat depressing, and amusing to counter it.

When I saw that opera, two young friends of mine told me they were trying to become more cultured, and so wanted to know whether they should go see this opera too. I said it was just too weird. Start with with Mozart.

[Insert CSB Moment] - I was in that production and those dancing noses were by far the most popular thing about the entire opera. The singing was also rather splendid, if I do say so, myself!

Were you one of the noses? All the legs looked like male legs, were the dancers very attractive any pictures of the guys without their noses?

what part did you play if not a nose?
