Thunderdome would be WITH live factchecking.

Expecting one person to fact check is a tall order. The networks should be doing their own form of factchecking tho.

Not sure I like the idea of a Moderator being a fact-checker.  They would do better to hire an independent group to run a chyron in real time, if that were possible.  But it's not because a) no one is that independent and b) Trump will spout so many lies, in such rapid succession, that the cyron won't be able to keep up.

Then it would become Charon's song and dance routine, which is about the level of Trump's debating style anyway, so it would be a good fit.

This won't matter. Either you believe from the last 4 years that Trump is a compulsive liar that hasn't been truthful about nearly anything... or you likely know that already and just don't care.

Trump's reputation and trustworthiness is trash, people will just assume in the debates that Trump is full of shiat, and will likely be proven correct.

This is the problem. The Democratic nominee is very vulnerable on some fact check issues and even though Trump is the worst, they aren't willing to deal with or even acknowledge their own issues.

A major shot Clinton took in 2016 was when trump told her to release her speeches . Instead of doing the obvious and saying "I will release my speeches if you release your taxes" she just didn't acknowledge it and looked suspicious.

Here Biden is more worried about his past stance on eliminating Social Security and Medicare among many others. They can even fact check him on race relations during the Obama administration. Instead the campaign would rather try and pretend he is perfect than hit Trump with fact checking during the debate.

Some Farker in an earlier thread made the best suggestion. Joe simply counts them. Every time Trump lies, Joe calls out the number, without explanation. After a few, either Trump will ask or a moderator will ask and he can just smile with all of his teeth and say "I'm just counting every time this guy spouts malarkey"

Even if Trump tried to do the same, he wouldn't be able to keep count so it would be even funnier

2020-09-27 6:48:54 PM
Who says moderators have to be fact checkers? With a team of fact checkers they could make corrections as the debate goes on with a slight delay. It might not stop Trump from getting sound bites, but people watching the debate would know and you'd have clips of corrections all over the web.

Lots of opinion programs have essentially this feature. There's no reason it couldn't (and shouldn't) be implemented in a debate.

2020-09-27 6:58:35 PM
If the moderator fact-checks, then Trump is able to whine that the moderator is plotting against him.  If Biden does the fact-checking, then Biden spends all his time on Trumps B.S. instead of talking about his message.  It's a Win-win for Trump.

This.  The debates are important not because Trump will be exposed as a liar, everyone including a sizeable chunk of his supporters know that. The point is that stumbles over himself like an idiot and ultimately gets curbstomped by Biden.  Leave his on-air enablers sputtering to excuse it or claim its a win.  Let his terrible performance demoralize those on the fence into at least not voting if not switching to Biden.

The point is to cement Biden as presidential while showing how weak Trump is on air.

Unfortunately facts don't matter in this election.  Its a contest between the people who care about facts versus those that base their political decisions on baseless appeals to emotion.   Simpletons who play real life follow the leader.  So this debate needs to show his supporters their tough guy leader getting embarrassed. They may not outwardly admit it, but they will know.  And it will push them, even if only a little, towards not voting or going third party.

Will it move the needle much? Probably not.  But a handful of votes can flip a swing state.  2000 in Florida, shenanigans aside, allegedly got decided on 500 some ballots.  Less than a thousand more Gore votes in the right place and we are talking completely new timeline.

TLDR: The opposition doesn't care about facts, so fact checking is pointless. Getting shamefully owned by Biden? Worth its weight in gold.  So we just need Joe in top form.

This is actually how it should be in proper debate protocol.  It's the job of the debater's opponent to challenge his/her premises, facts, reasoning, and conclusions.  Now, this debate on a national stage for the presidency isn't judged on rigorous metrics by experienced judges. It's judged by a broad, lay population. I'm sure this requires a different strategy than traditional debate and I hope Biden is preparing diligently. Trump is weaknesses, narcissism, willful ignorance, hyperbole, and other shortcomings render him easy to embarrass if Biden can capitalize.
