My problem in understanding these chucklefarks is that I can't twist my brain into theIr fearful, paranoid, diaper-shiatting worldview.

Before someone comes in with "well that's your problem," they also don't understand me. Which I've seen with my own extended famiily who lost their feeble little minds when Obama was elected.

I've gone from silently putting up with their bullshiat to calling the racists in my family pants-shiatting cowards, donating to BLM in their name, and sending them receipts.

THIS

Normally I can at least understand and consider an opposing point of view, even if I don't agree with it. But there isn't anything to understand when trying to engage with a MAGA or evangelical these days; they seem to thrive on a toxic brew of fear, insecurity, and a warped sense of faith and patriotism. And to support it they are full of conspiracies, lies, and prejudices spray painted with a thin veneer of half-truths to make them seem almost valid if you look at them in low light, from an angle, and squint with one eye.

It's like trying to have a conversation with an enraged lab monkey who has learned enough sign language to communicate at a third grade level.

White male bigots look at Russia, with its crumbling society due to declining birth rates and think that's a goal.  And they know the more females have access to education and health services, lower birth rates follow.  And if a society recognizes any couples other than hetero ones, guys have to compete for ever decreasing numbers of available females.  Women have the power to influence society tremendously, which really infuriates men with limited power already.  Guys that recognize the power struggle, learn to work within the confines dictated by women.  IOW, they become civilized and move easily in society, while the lunkheads complain bitterly about life's injustices.  Women can seek out and find companionship easily, as long as the society they live in allow for the humanity of women.  Men have to either adapt to the women's expectations, or use force to have the same access to women.  Societies that use law or force of tradition to restrict women and their movements are more tolerant of men using violence to obtain results and less tolerant of change.  For dumbass reasons, a whole cabal has risen in America that proudly announces their weakness.  Rather than, maybe read a book, every once in awhile, to expand the width and depth of their personality, they want to drag everyone down to their level.
Women who try to rely on their looks and never develop their personality, discover how shallow life can be, once the beauty fades.  Men who rely on intimidation eventually learn that boundaries exist.

Bottom line, it's always fear.  Fear of others having what someone thinks they deserve, even if they haven't lifted a finger in self-improvement.

People haven't really changed since, well, ever. As a species, we do stupid things time and again for reasons that make a certain amount of sense for whatever tribe we identify with. It's like a knee-jerk reaction against "the other". Now that the people with power feel like it's slipping away from them they're rising up to fark up those who they think are taking it from them (the browns, blacks, gheys, smart people) just like they always do.

Is it inevitable? I guess we'll see, but my money is on a murder storm this November.

In school, when they talked about brother fighting brother and neighbor fighting neighbor in the civil war, I couldn't understand turning on loved ones and friends.

Now my family is full of Trump supporters, I'm the lone progressive, and neighborhoods are full of Trump and Biden signs in yards next to each other.

Our country is on the precipice of complete chaos, which is being forced from the top down. How can we escape another civil war?

2020-09-27 9:57:21 AM
The potential for unity is so rich in America - it is literally set up for that - if racism could be taken out of the calculus.

With the 1A, everyone is literally free from being told by the state what religon you must follow, coupled with the right to speak your mind on top of that. The citizen is empowered to do, or not do, whatever the hell they want - in so long as it doesn't inflict harm - not emotion conflict, harm - on someone, or constrain their rights.

Such civil rights, such secularism, could be a tie that binds every immigrant to the country - and successfully does so every day in Everyday America, mostly, it should be noted, despite all the rancorous media and political rhetoric and actions.

But instead, ignoring these fundamental, patriotic values, there has always been a cohort of nationalist sentiment that wants to pretend that the constitution only exists for them and theirs, and would rather try to use the document to weaponize their paranoia

The thing is, the person who wrote that is right and wrong.  Definitely, the two that he named should have been sent to the gallows.  But the reality is that the entirety of the Confederacy should have been, down to the last man who fought for it.  Letting the Confederacy live on in the hearts of those who fought for it made sure that they would want it to be remembered on their terms as long as they lived.

Yeah, our government at the time was way too lenient on a group of traitors, and had we done the right thing then, we wouldn't be where we are now, with a neo-Confederacy becoming ascendant.

Actually?
If you care to delve deeper, there is a body of research that shows one result of the Civil War - including Sherman's "March to the Sea" - can still be seen in the poverty of Southern States.

The South, post-war, was not only defeated but broken economically and parts never, ever recovered.

At the time there was literally nothing left and precious few men left to hang.

And, of course, those men you wish were hanged then have been dead now for some time.
