I bet the insulation provided by the hay bales is fantastic.

It comes at a huge cost in space, but who doesn't want burrowing creatures in their walls?

Saw them live before everything shut down in CA in March. They were great. Green Jelly Jam, lots of bands there, at a golf club.

That's how adobe houses used to be made, and still are, when authenticity is a priority.

From what I have heard it is superb.  It is also excellent at not burning down (packed straw doesn't burn easily).  Biggest issues are keeping it dry while building and wiring or anything that needs to go through walls is a pain.

Yeah, quite disturbing for a Disney cartoon. Walt Disney certainly have added twisted humor in his works back in the day.

So they estimate an upper end cost of 2400 Euro per square meter, which is $259.34/sqft

Your "average" home is between 2000 and 2500 square feet these days.

259.34 x 2000 = $518,689.32 not counting the cost of the land.

Cut that by half and we're talking about something useful.  This appears to be some bog-standard hipster bullshiat.

soak in borax and let it dry out, like recycled in-wall insulation

Good against fires. The California Straw Builders Association has been around for a while. It may be a useful building method for their future hell scape.

I am reading The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England and exactly that "feature" of peasant housing is mentioned.

It;s not even as hard as a log cabin, but I"m sure that all kinds of posers would like to have a log cabin, since it's "authentic."
I could reasonably build a straw bale house myself. That's the attraction. Bales, if treated correctly, are no more likely to rot or fall apart than any other building material.

But you pussies go out and spend 200 grand on a genuine log cabin, and then watch the windows crack because the builder didn't know how to build a log cabin correctly.

Not sure if serious.

But just in case: it's a frame from The Three Little Pigs, a Silly Symphony cartoon released in 1933 by the Walt Disney studio.

I don't know how treated the hay was, but stray hay his lots of empty space and air. It would make for useful insulation. Then again it doesnt take much cow shiat to really stink somthing up.

Most of the interesting "low cost" environmentally sound techniques are very much for people living in anarchy townships/counties in the perfect geographical location... or super rich people paying out the nose for engineers/architects and attorneys to represent them before the zoning board/building inspector.

Zoning laws are great, as they do prevent stupid people from burning their families to death in electrical fires.  It's just annoying that "DIY low cost housing" is rarely attainable for even the functional poorish people.
