The bodies of the dead whales were being separated into groups and enclosed with water booms to try keep them in one place and isolated from sharks and other predators.

Wouldn't the "sharks and other predators" be the most efficient and cost-effective way to dispose of the carcasses? It might not be the most esthetically pleasing thing, but nature has had billions of years to devise methods of reclaiming dead bodies.

With that many bodies to dispose of, they may need to up the explosive power:

Fun fact: if you detonate whales on the moon, they will reach orbit

Whatever bastard who named them 'pilot whales' has a sick sense of humor and I approve

Usually they sink to the ocean floor where crabs and things eat them.

Put it in a can, send it up here and my dog will eat it.

Explosives are an accepted form of euthanizing a whale. Strap to the head and blammo. I'd post a video but some of the more squeamish Farkers might have not sleep well. Look on youtube for "exploding whale cape town" if you don't need a fainting couch.

I remember like yesterday how he swam in out of nowhere to our trawler in the Bering. He made me so mad at first that I wanted to detonate him. Then, later, when I had to blow him up, it was like having to blast some of my own folks.

Wait, pilot whales? We let them fly airplanes now? Hey why not, it's 2020 - a whale piloting an airplane probably wouldn't even crack the top 50 weird/stupid things this year.

I know it's a joke, but pilots have been around longer than airplanes, by over seven centuries.

You kids today, always rushing in the blow shiat up. Have you even poked it with a stick yet? Thrown a rock at it? Gentlemen have a bit of foreplay.
