The 35-year-old actress was only 12 when she appeared as Sabé, Queen Amidala's double, in the epic movie.

So Phantom Menace came out in 1997. I have no recollection of that.

Given that she was probably still on Coruscant near the end of The Force Awakens, I don't think so.

Wasn't Sabe the character who played Queen Amidala's double while Padme was pretending to be one of the handmaidens so she could stealthily join Qui-Gon and Obi Wan on Datooine?

And if so, how can she not remember having to undergo all that make-up, costuming, and wearing what had to be a very heavy wig.

It's perplexing to me how Portman has managed to have a career after how awful she was in those. Not a decent line-reading, or expression in the whole trilogy.

This is the "damning with faint praise" equivalent of godwin's law.

Did you know that the Prequels were also better than the home videos my parents shot on grainy hand-camera footage with the camera mic of my school's first-grade nativity play?

Lucas has always written terribly, yet everyone in the originals managed to shine either through talent or charisma.
Portman has none of those.

Lucas approved a behind-the-scenes documentary about the production that made it incredibly clear that basically everyone involved was trying to give a good performance and he was personally, often explicitly intervening to demand that they do another take but with less emotion and expression.

It's... kind of baffling to watch it since it's a documentary explaining how a movie was made that makes WTF Lucas was trying to do even less clear, but I think it salvaged a number of careers.  Though, not all of them... poor Hayden Whatshisface basically had to drop out of acting entirely in shame.

At the very least, the prequels properly planned out a mostly coherent story across the three movies and mostly pulled it off. They mostly failed in the details (e.g. dialog, directing, annoying Anakin actors...)

The sequels, however, were a rush-job Disney wanted to put out ASAP to recoup their investment in LucasFilm. Instead of taking some time to plot out a consistent story across the three, they originally just threw each movie to a different writer/director and said, "have at it".
