Richard Strauss was a great composer before Stanley Kubrick came along and turned him into "that 2001 guy". Now he's just another hack.

I do remember learning about George Gershwin in 6th grade. He did have nice contributions to music.

There are many great American composers, I lean toward Copeland, but Ellington's longevity and breadth are astounding. He is beyond any other american composer.
