Copland is a fine choice for best American composer and of course Gershwin was a genius. But William Grant Still should be part of the conversation. His first symphony was the most performed American symphony pre-WWII and just as American as anything Copland composed.

Really depends what kind of mood you're in. Personally I like a little Philip Glass when I'm sitting in my sunroom reading the Saturday paper.

There are many great American composers, I lean toward Copeland, but Ellington's longevity and breadth are astounding. He is beyond any other american composer.

F, I forgot about Weird Al. He is truly the greatest composer of food themed music. Easily the hardest category to conquer

Yes! Of course there's a lot of Billy Straham in the Orchestra's repertoire, but even Armstrong wasn't consistently excellent for five decades.

That said, there is something the claim that Armstrong is the American composer. Many of his recorded solos were not improvised but notated. His solo for "Cornet Chop Suet," for example, was copyrighted before the recording, even though it sounds like he made it up on the spot, because his playing can pull that off. And the list of artists influenced by Armstrong go from Coleman Hawkins to Little Richard to James Brown to David Byrne to Kendrick Lamar. I imagined he influenced 'classical' conposers as well but I can't think of anyone more influential.

ELP needed to ask Copeland:

Stewart Young, ELP's manager from 1972-present, made this comment on the documentary Beyond the Beginning:
The interesting thing... was that we had to get the permission of Aaron Copland, the composer. The publishing house said forget it. So I got Mr Copland's home number, called him up and he was very friendly on the phone. And he says "Send it to me, let me listen." And he loved it. He called me and said "This is brilliant, this is fantastic. This is doing something to my music."

I was going to say John Williams, too.

I do remember learning about George Gershwin in 6th grade. He did have nice contributions to music.
