There's a part of me that always wanted to live in a neighborhood with an HOA so I could just terrorize them, but then I decided I'd rather drink and watch star trek on netflix.

The city of Ladue, in St. Louis County, and where I went to school.  Someone put up a yard sign protesting the Gulf War in 1990, and the city said they couldn't put up any sign.

The Supreme Court decided unanimously for the sign person.

I live in a neighborhood where there's been BLM signs since Rodney King.  Of course, we have freedom in our neighborhood.   We're not run by a bunch of redneck racists.  Get the fark out of racist Colorado while you still can.

Well, sounds like the situation has been handled well. The HOA says they'll find a new management company if this continues and the fines have been put on hold until the rules have been rewritten.

I really don't understand the benefits of living in a neighborhood with an HOA.

So you pay a fee and they do what? Mow your lawn for you?  Make sure your neighbors don't clutter up their yard?

I would rather own my house, own the property it sits on, and do with it as I please and not have anything short of a local government ordinance tell me how to use it.

HOAs do have purpose, if it's rules are reasonable and the application of those rules enforced evenly.

You never had a next door neighbor use old junk cars as planters in their yard, have you?

If you have the money and want an orderly neighborhood of conformity then HOAs are great.  You probably pay contractors to do everything as well, in all the approved colors.  You also like a uniform lawn of one kind of grass, cut to the right height, at least once a week.  You also might have a few dead prostitutes sealed in 80 gallon drums in the basement, but that's not against HOA rules.

My previous HOA did jack sheot except pay a company $200k/yr to maintain the pool.  And reminded us that leaving our garage open for more than 2 minutes was a VIOLATION OF GOVERNING CC&Rs.  Yay.

But my current HOA doesn't seem too bad... they maintain our greenbelt, pools, splash pads, playgrounds, sports fields, gym, lakes, fountains, dog park, clubhouses.  And no bs warnings in 10 years so far.

I think a good bit of it comes down to bad neighbors being bad neighbors, HOA or no.

My last one was 100/yr and mostly was there to keep ice off the roads.

They did once threaten legal action against a home that had a hay bale on their porch as a fall decoration.  They also knew my outdoor driveway light was out before I did.  There were rumors of the president going around taking pictures of the rooms through the windows and what not, I mean HOA leadership positions are catnip for nosy people.

So yeah, they are great from keeping underground dog fighting rings, hay bales, and ice out of your hood, but have the potential to be evil and costly.

Hey!  My Camaro on cinder blocks is a work of art.  And I'll get it fixed up..  someday.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.  So the gist of it is, depends on the HOA if you're getting boned or if you're getting a good service.  And the general goal of an HOA is to make your neighborhood look like the one from Edward Scissorhands.

They perfect HOA is one in which everyone agrees that their own house is the worst of the bunch, and that all the other houses look better.

Unless they have a stated definition of election season, Trump made it election season when he started his reelection campaign.

And it would be pretty easy to argue that signs for BLM support is politically related speech, given how much election pressure they are applying.

Also if you want to complain about people breaking the rules: Start with the people in positions of power making rules to protect themselves while they hurt others and just breaking the ones they don't like without consequences.

obviously, someone like Chip, the first person to comment on TFA, got his camo briefs in a wad about the BLM sign and complained so the HOA had to act. but nobody complains about 'congratulations' signs so the HOA never hears about them.

The HOA in my parents neighborhood has very limited power, only over the common areas and I think the one rule they have over the homes is not unattached structures, like a shed.

This is the real problem with HOAs. The concept is okay, and initially they usually work out okay. But a certain type of person always gravitates to them, and the reasonable folk get driven out by the S-holes and their passionate intensity. In time, the authoritarian creeps take over, and take ownership of their mission.
So you end up with petty fascist bullies, and/or in this case, racists.
