Because it's a great farking show.

Good for them--they pursued a fresh, non-cynical vision that stands on its own. It's also funny as hell.

Article wouldn't load for me but I imagine being widely available on Netflix helped.  I don't think it would have carried the day had it just been on the CBC.

The shows true brilliance is it doesn't try to force you to laugh.  The writers and actors are so confident in their low key style that there are almost no sight gags or overly snappy dialogue.

Probably too intelligent for the Emmy voters. Frankly, it's amazing that it was on network TV in the US at all.

I only watched the first episode (I'm not good at binge watching). I liked it. It had kind of a "Newhart" vibe to it, but where there was no analogue to Bob Newhart's character. I'll have to go watch some more, I guess.

Reminds me of how people complained about Frasier dominating the Emmys over Friends.  Once upon a time the Emmy voters appreciated humor that wasn't 90% "witty" comebacks.

how obscure is a show that features both Levy and O'Hara at this point in their careers?

Gosh, I don't know... maybe because it swept the Emmys a couple of days ago. Only a guess though.

I'm almost through Season Two.

As I've said in previous threads, I still haven't cracked a smile.
I'm now "familiar" with the characters so I'm sort of invested in what is going on, but at this point I'm watching because my wife wants to watch it.

Also, I like Alexis.

Because of Schitt's creek, I did watch Kim's Convenience. Then, I watched Corner Gas. Now, I think that I've run out of Canada shows on streaming platforms and I'm sad. Make more shows, Canada!

I don't think I've ever seen reruns of Little Mosque, let alone it being available on streaming platforms. It ended its run and then just seemed to disappear. And yet Mr. D is.

I haven't seen half of these: https://www.vulture.com/article/best-canadian-sitcoms-streaming.html

Those I have, were hilarious; so maybe this list is a somewhat good reference (?).

Truth be told, I've only watched a few episodes of Schitt's Creek. I have nothing but love for Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara (Canadian comedy treasures), but it never really got into the series. The S.O. casually watched the entire series and loved it. Beyond the few episodes I saw, I caught a few scenes here or there in passing while she was watching, and had a "sensible chuckle".

Kim's Convenience is also good.

It's a damn travesty that Rhea Seehorn hasn't even been nominated as best actress.

Schitt's Creek is seldom "bust a gut" laughing. It's mostly amusing, rather than funny. But it has some classic character driven comedic moments (Bingo Lingfarker!) but mostly, to stay believable, It stays grounded in characters.

I love 30 Rock, for example, but towards the end of its run it had to reach into more and more implausible places to get laughs - verging on Magic Realism. That's because it was never grounded in believable, rounded characters. Schitt's Creek gets MORE real with every season.
