like tonight's supreme court news, this is depressing as hell. and not one tiny bit surprising.

i learned "leave no trace" as:

"pack in TP or tampons? pack out the used. find a firescar? take it apart, never make a new one. have cooked food you can't eat? bury it in a really deep cathole or pack it out. brush your teeth? better spin like a top and widely disperse any non-natural toothpaste that's not safe to swallow. walking off an established trail? spread out, don't follow each other, don't make a "new" trail" -in the mid 1990s.

i DON"T expect 1st time weekend campers to be hardcore like that. at all. but i sure as shiat don't expect them to leave blatant plastic trash, blankets, pillows, wagons, and whiskey bottles strewn EVERYWHERE either!

humans. american humans. we pretty much suck.

According to Braden, who is a hiking influencer under the name Plug-It In Hikes, Max Patch usually has no more than five campers at its peak at a time.

And thanks to you, it's now overrun. See how great your influence is?

too many people are doing too many things without taking instruction. here in Ohio you just have to fill out a document to purchase a firearm. they don't make you go learn what to do with the firearm. this is idiocy.

Stayed in Owhiro Bay, Wellington and there is a well known Russian rock stacker.

His piles of shiat are tall enough to kill a small child, and every time a rock is disturbed it destroys the soil nearby.

Took exceptional happiness from knocking as many over as I could.

Around here, people paint smooth stones with messages of love and sharing, and leave them along trails for kids to find.

Having been around on Fark when the indoor smoking bans started hitting big US cities, and having heard the constant refrain of "well if you didn't want me to throw my butts on the ground, you would have provided me with an ashtray", I'm not at all surprised that most of these people are animals with no respect for anything.

Oh man, those are the worst.

I go into a fair number of homes on a regular basis to meet clients. There's always this couple who obviously decided to indulge their incredible sense of taste and get a bunch of wall decorations that say "FAMILY" and "LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH" or they have some kind of "family rules" which are generic stuff. I actually saw the same list twice in two days.

Often there's one or more kind of decorative tables against walls, with a big glass bowl full of beads and some weird styrofoam balls, etc. It's always a big waste of space and makes it clear that the room is poorly thought out and they just shoved that in there to gobble up space which they're paying for. Also, it kind of makes the place resemble a doctor's office waiting room.

I find myself thinking the following...

1) Who makes this shiat? Who sits down and says, "Ok, I'm going to design some terrible family-themed word art"?

2) Why has this become popular? Oh, it must be a thing from TV or something...that explains it. It must be something that they use to fill up useless spaces on one of those useless HGTV shows.

3) Once this junk outlives its lack of purpose, what happens? It's not going to be trendy forever. Does it just get heaved into the landfill and forgotten? What a waste of materials.

4) It's going to suck big time donkey balls when we look back in 30 years and see that this garbage was actually some of the defining decor of the current generation. And then it might actually become popular again as a "retro" thing. WTF.

Me and 3 old army buddies are in the planning stage of making a through hike beginning early spring. We are doing it to honor a friend who died in operation just cause when we parachuted into Rio Hato. We have all spent a lot of times consulting A.T. veterans and regulars. I've been told by several to pack heat that crime is getting worse. Crime...on a trail..in mostly huge forested areas. The human race is really starting to piss me off. Now you cant even escape thieves in the wilderness. So I'm not surprised they're trashing it up as well.

People just don't give a hoot anymore.

Shenandoah National park Doesn't have enough employees To handle all these people and are Currently looking for volunteers From patc to help direct traffic and clean picnic grounds fire pits.
Theyve been Putting up cones to keep people from parking along the road but people Park in between them and tear up the shoulder. Before reopening whole Trails and parking lots were shut the fark down So people just pooped next to The toilets and like idiots they just thought entrances to everything was closed not the actual trails. Just never mind. Pisses me off. Picking flowers and getting attitude about being told the ranger would write them an expensive ticket. Here's a ziplock bag for the toilet paper you just left under than rock over there. Don't stack rocks from the river cuz not good for fish and salamders etc don't paint rocks with stupid farking
Motivations.  People just making nature about themselves and try to make your experience about them also. Look at these dumb cairns I made.  Look at my Trashy orange peel. Crabtree falls has a cairn garden. Ugh.

Join a local or national group and help Your trails survive. PATC is a good one
