That Bonzo could duplicate someone's double-bass-pedal 16th note fill with ONE kickdrum suggests subby's not wrong.

I'm a huge Rush fan, so I'll just say, yeah Bonham was one of the two best drummers I've ever seen!

Recently, some friends whose opinions I respect had a debate on facebook on whether Bill Ward was better than Bonham. I mean, I like Sabbath as much as the next guy, but I just watched in disbelief and bit my tongue.

He was certainly more of a natural, "feel" drummer than Peart. That's what is important to me.  Peart was excellent and more technically proficient, but his drumming was always a bit mechanical.

For example, listen to "Wanton Song" near the end at about the 3:30 mark where Bonzo just breaks up the entire song with two beats to the snare out of the blue, but keeps the rhythm going.  Farking brilliant and something Peart would have never thought of to do.

I love them both, but I give Bonham the nod here.

I'm not going to rage, Subby. I'm just going to feel sorry for you in the same way I pity a severely impaired stroke victim struggling to get a seemingly simple point across.

Tyrone Slothrop: Keith Moon and Buddy Rich frown on your shenanigans, subby.

To be fair: Buddy Rich was a jazz drummer. Jazz drumming is way more complex.

Went to see Woodstock last year, and he was hands down my favorite part of the film.

Ageless wonder Keith Richards doesn't like Bonham.  Called him heavy handed and just a banger.  Also didn't care for Robert Plant's vocals.

Pete Townshend loves Led Zeppelin- the people in the band.  He says he has never liked a single thing they ever did musically.

YMMV.

I just want to say that humanity's seemingly irresistible desire to name one wonderful artist 'better' than another wonderful artist is exhausting and pointless. What the fark happened to the cavemen eons ago that made us feel the need to rank all the things?

Always enjoyed the deep tom-heavy sound of John Bonham.  Especially when Jimmy Page put a sprinkle of phase when he hit the cymbals. .

To my inexpert ears I can't tell who's better but I do have a friend who's a drummer who claims that Bill Ward is hugely underrated, don't know if he'd go so far as to say he's better than Bonham was though

I'm a life long Rush fan, and Peart's death drew tears.  And I agree Bonham was a better rock drummer.

But there will always be one better than both of them...

Nick Mason of Pink Floyd is a bit underrated too. But I won't argue that Bonham was possibly the greatest "rock" drummer. I do think it's silly to try to pick the best of all time, because everyone has their lane/specialty. Buddy Rich, Stewart Copeland, et al have their places as best, to some degree in my mind.

Bonham just went out and laid the wood.
