He spent about 32 years in prison, mostly due to a spiteful mother-in-law and a willing monarch, so there wasn't much time for debauchery. Much of his work was penned post-revolution when it was beneficial for him to portray the nobility as bloodthirsty sex fiends. I believe it earned him the right to sit on a citizen's tribunal in judgment of the aforementioned spiteful mother-in-law who he, oddly enough, did not have beheaded or imprisoned. Talk about awkward family gatherings...

But they were penned behind bars and are the products of an incarcerated imagination - not accounts of his personal life and crimes.

There's a whole genre of French scandalous nobility novels penned in the aftermath of the revolution. Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuse is the epitome of that kind of novel. de Sade's are essentially just the wank mag equivalent.
