But these masks, which would have been very valuable, would often sacrificed by throwing them into a lake or marsh as an offering to the god.

As an Archeological talkin' guy...I'll throw in my 2 cents...

It wasn't a "ritual" mask per-se...I'm guessing it was used for plays..The Greeks loved them some theater,
and they used masks..And a LOT of their theater was based around Olympian drama (of course)..
It's a lot more likely that this was something used and possibly that the beard broke during a play or
something and they tossed it..They also had burial masks..(see below)..for the upper class people who
actually had tombs and stuff...
