A lot of great ideas that needed more 'fleshing out'.

Maybe that album was such a gem BECAUSE he left all that noodling off the final 45 minute finished product?

Every good artist needs an editor.  Prince was no fool and knew this. If he wanted to release that stuff, we'd have had it three decades ago.

I agree his well-known studio albums are just above-average pop.

He was farking fire live, though, and luckily we have lots of videos of his performances. I didn't get the love for him until I'd watched a few of those. Damn.

Objectively, not a great song. However, pop makes the money that lets the other stuff get recorded. That is Victor Wooten level playing...

Well, at least it will stop you from doing absolutely ludicrous things such as saying that Prince is overrated and mediocre. He was one of the best musicians in modern music.

But even if you don't play an instrument anyone with even the slightest musical sense should be able to recognize that.   I'm sorry, but if you claim that Prince is overrated and/or mediocre you are basically just stating that you are basically tone deaf.

Not everybody of course have to like his music, but it shouldn't take much to at least appreciate the talent and the skills.

Well, there's a couple of levels of that here. You certainly don't have to be a player to enjoy music. However, you're not going to meet a lot of people that can play ALL the instruments like a virtuoso, and also be able to do the work in the studio at that level. So, I can see if you don't care for his brand of pop, but let's not call him the most over-rated performer. Deal?

It's always interesting to me how incapable some people are of this. There are lots of music artists I don't like but whose talents I can clearly recognize and respect. They may not being doing music that speaks to me, but it isn't hard to see when they're good at what they do.

Anyone who denies that Prince was a ridiculously talented artist is someone whose views on music should never, ever be paid attention to.

Pretty easy to tell that someone has never listened to more than handful of Prince songs.

Not liking Prince is a valid opinion...tastes vary, which is cool. But calling him "overrated" and "mediocre" is really, really ignorant and basically just flat out wrong.

That's where having a talented band helps out. For Jazz artists, it was the "studio musicians", and for a lot of famous names who tanked on solo projects it was their fellow band-mates. Taken individually you can see this with sooo many cases, where the solo stuff was mostly a scattering of diamonds in a mountain of shiat, but when you combined the group they polished each other's work to greatness.

Queen
Zepplin
Fleetwood Mac
Journey
The GoGos
Genesis
The Police
Pearl Jam
The Smiths

I could cite examples all day.

That's what is most interesting to me about releasing outtakes like that. I enjoy peeking behind the curtain and seeing the creative process, so while material like that is half-finished and not totally satisfying on its own, it's a great window into how an artist works.

Heard one last year that was him riffing on ideas on the piano, just playing a simple chord progression and tossing out various melodies. It was interesting to hear him circling around trying to land on something that worked. There were four or five bits in it that could easily have been lifted out and fleshed out into a song.

The dude was absurdly prolific. He just never stopped writing.

This. Dude was a generational talent. I don't like probably 80 percent of his output but you just have to be brain dead to claim that dude was not an amazing songwriter, musician, singer, producer, performer.

It will always be one of life's mysteries to me that someone could just absolutely just shred on electric guitar like he could... but then just choose not to do that most of the time. Brilliant people are weird. I know he was nuts but he was also amazing.

I saw him twice, 1997 and then I think 2005. incredible.

the first show he played every instrument onstage, except the horns.  He danced his ass off, played the most incredible rhythm/funk guitar and then would rip off devastating guitar solos, singing his ass off, to songs he wrote.  Savant level stuff on and one of those skill sets, and he had like, 8.  it was astonishing.

I'm on the fence about this box - I love the album and am intrigued as hell by the outtakes.  The Miles Davis stuff was bootlegged a long time and ago and it looks good on paper but didn't really amount to much live.  it's as if Miles is laying back to let Prince have the limelight, and yet Prince does  the same. So it never really gets going.  it'a a neat historical document but never catches fire.

Creating great pop music is probably a lot harder than writing a Neutral Milk Hotel album.

Sign O' the Times is basically all the best bits of three different albums Prince was working on but scrapped because he wasn't happy with them. Prince put a ton of work in on what eventually became this album.

I'm not a fan of Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel, but no farking way would I go into a Springsteen thread and try to convince people he sucks.

Nobody with any kind of functioning ear, or sense of music history at least, would talk shiat about Prince. Goddamn.  100% of professional musicians would just laugh at your silly ass

This is one of my favorite tracks. It's Prince and the Revolution trying out a new song, The Screams of Passion, which he later gave to one of his proteges. This is the Revolution taking direction from Prince as he creates something awesome, calling out the key changes and arrangement, and leading the band toward the vision he had for the song.

They were freakin' talented, and Prince was every bit the master of his craft.

Here's a nice live version of one of Prince's B-sides (and one of my favorite songs). This live rehearsal version is better because they just jam on it without a care about running out of time, fitting on a record, or anything like that. Again, Prince is calling out the changes and instrumentation as they play.

"overrated pop music" my ass.

Here's one of Prince's earliest songs, Soft & Wet, in a fantastic second version that he never released. It's WAY funkier. It's a shame he didn't put this on on the album, because it holds up better over the decades than the official version.

There are superfans, completists, etc. who will want as much music as possible from their favorite artists. Some are just happy with what has been released. For me, anything released by Prince or The Beatles, whether remasters, demos, unreleased, etc. is going in my library. I was King Sh*t when I had the Black Album on tape back in the 80's...everybody wanted it. Not all of what gets released is great. I never listen to the Beatles Live at the BBC release anymore, but I'm glad I have it and it gives you just a little bit more of an artist you love.

My biggest problem with Prince is that I've never had enough money to buy all the Prince music that I'd like and I never will.

Years before Prince died, I absolutely went off on an Apple customer service rep because an ITunes update wiped all my Prince songs - none of which were purchased from ITunes. The rep gave me instructions for recovering my disappeared music, but the a lot of it - including nearly all the Prince songs - was just gone.

It ruined using ITunes for me. I still buy a song from ITunes every two or three years (I once made weekly purchases), but I just have no enthusiasm for doing business with ITunes anymore.
