Tell your right-wing grandma and gramps that Trump is taking away Medicare funding for the hospital they'll need to go to when their COPD flares up.

As part of the justification for the switch to the new system, then-HHS chief spokesperson Michael Caputo complained that the CDC's voluntary reporting system provided data from only 85% of hospitals. "[T]he President's COVID response requires 100 percent to report," he wrote in a statement to NPR in mid-July. "

What COVID response?

If President Hillary was telling hospitals that they'll lose money unless they start reporting all their data, I'd feel pretty confident that she would only do that based on reports from the CDC that they're missing critical information. But since this is President Tittybaby, it's just as likely that he's looking for a bullshiat reason to hurt hospitals in liberal cities.

Also, "You better report your supplies so I can have Jared direct the feds to seize those supplies, give them to a third party, then have that third party sell the seized supplies back to the hospitals at blackmail rates."

Remember the farmers newly bankrupt from Trump's trade war, who still believed Trump was going to save them if they gave him some more time.

The hospitals should just c.c. the CDC the results, lol.

HHS wants control of the info badly - so that Azar can suppress or manipulate it, without having their messaging (this is fine.jpg) contradicted by the CDC. They're trying to dress it up like the CDC is incompetent and unreliable, all of a sudden, for which the opposite is true, of course.

While I actually agree that hospitals need to report things in a timely fashion, as usual Trump farks it up. The real telling thing is in the last few paragraphs, namely that this rigid requirement makes inaccuracies more likely.

But what this REALLY is ... It's a way to make everyone be out of compliance so that Trump can arbitrarily decide who gets federal money. It's like making weed illegal and leaving it at the officers discretion as to who gets punished and lo and behold the prisons are full of black and hispanic people.  Trump wants to be able to punish the west coast and the North East and this is a way to do it.

Wait...he'll withhold funds if they 'don't' report data? I would have figured the opposite. This must be where he wants them to all fax it in to one room where some trump lick-spittle sits and massages and trashes most of the data.

University hospitals who report data and receive lots of federal grants and funds are going to have to tell trump to get f***ed pretty quick. Technically his stupid thought to withhold money from any system that teaches diversity or whatever will hit Universities hard also. They have whole departments and staff devoted to that kind of thing. Now he's gonna hold funds if they don't send all data to the stupider (if possible) version of Eric to destroy? Universities should be planning to go ham on this moron

The pending update to the reporting guidelines will only require the supply data once a week. However, draft documents show the newest guidelines would add several questions about influenza patients such as the number admitted to the hospital with flu, the number of flu patients in intensive care unit beds and the number of patients confirmed to have both flu and COVID-19. This information may be required to be reported daily from late October, according to a draft document.

Sounds like shenanigans to me. Somehow the flu will kill more than COVID this year.

In addition to threatening hospitals' funding over COVID numbers, this is also looking for PPE inventory updates. Given the federal seizure of the PPE in the supply chain* to kick off the administration's virus response, can seizure from hospitals be next?

How many more people need to be Caputo'd to stop this?

* Hate to make this thread political, but a quick reminder for those still on the fence: the guy that gives himself an A+ response to the virus actually used federal forces to seize materials heading to hospitals, turning it over to newly created private firms to auction off. If that sounds reasonable/safe/good early response to you, you will have an easy decision at the ballot box!

A couple of thoughts.

The county health agencies get those numbers too, right? Can those be cross-checked against the CDC / HHS data that they publish? That might show any funny business.

Second, FOIA their ass. This is critical data for public policy, the HHS doesn't have the right to keep it to themselves or monkey with it.

"The added burden and stress could incentivize hospital staff to report inaccurate information, so as not to lose funding, says Lisa M. Lee, former chief science officer for public health surveillance at the CDC, who now works at Virginia Tech."

This is what struck me the most. This is encouraging false data. If reports have to be in 3 times/wk. At significant added hours to provide such data, or lose access to medicare funding(or whatever it is in the US). Hospitals will just submit..."something"....make shiat up if they have to. That helps absolutely no one.
Maybe that's the point?

NotTheBestDad: special20: Didn't Michael Caputo have a nervous breakdown? Maybe Trump handling his dirty work will hasten that massive stroke I've been hoping he has.

Not at all -> he just got caught intimidating people at CDC, so self-announced a paid vacation.

Real crazy behavior targeting specific people in the office doing their jobs (like a press woman confirming the existence of a program already announced, but to CNN), and more broadly accusing the CDC staff of sedition.

When it comes to stories like that, I am reminded of the Maj. Frank Burns character from the old M*A*S*H TV series.

Such a tight ass personality is likely a man who shiats tiny ribbons.

If the choice is the first one then there will obviously two very different sets of figures coming out. One from the CDC which is based on reality, and another heavily massaged for Trump's political benefit.
