Silicon Valley's innovation engine has been slow to produce useful new tools to help firefighters like Dave Winnacker extinguish the deadly blazes that each year fill California's skies with smoke.

Silicon Valley's innovation engine has been captured by social media frivolities.  Maybe they could write an app that would let firefighters easily upload and share pictures of themselves being incinerated?

FTFA: "But startups aiming to help improve public safety have found it hard to find funding from traditional venture capital investors, who don't see a lot of money to be made selling to cash-strapped fire departments."

Just pay for it. Fund it completely and give it away. It would be an enormous display of public good, and your company would be praised. You have entire mountain ranges of cash, you don't need fire departments to buy it.

/it'll never happen

But startups aiming to help improve public safety have found it hard to find funding from traditional venture capital investors, who don't see a lot of money to be made selling to cash-strapped fire departments.

Fire departments generally don't have extra money and rely on grants from the government and insurance companies for stuff like this. It's amazing the insurance companies aren't interested, as one would assume they are paying out large amounts for damage.
